USDA seeks comments on Animal Welfare Act licensing
Marking the 51st anniversary of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) this week, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue on Wednesday asked for input from the public to help determine potential updates to the law's licensing requirements.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is tasked with upholding and enforcing the AWA, which was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on Aug. 24, 1966.
"As a trained veterinarian, humane standards of care for animals are close to my heart and central to my love and concern for our four-legged friends," Perdue said. "Administering the AWA is a key USDA mission, and we are always looking for ways to improve. We welcome comments from the public as APHIS considers changes to the licensing requirements to help us fulfill this important responsibility."

Interactions between dairy foods, genes influence health outcomes
The old adage "you are what you eat" implies that the key to good health is as simple as eating healthy foods, but this well-known piece of nutrition advice ignores that an individual's response to food -- whether it be storing fat, making insulin, or breaking apart carbohydrates -- depends not only on properties of the food but also on properties of the individual, including their DNA. Genes influence food preferences, nutritional requirements and even whether a food improves an individual's health. This vast genetic variation within and between human populations argues against a "one-size-fits-all" diet. For optimal health, human diets need to get personal.
A new review paper by California Dairy Research Foundation executive director Gonca Pasin, Ph.D., and nutrition scientist Kevin B. Comerford, Ph.D., highlights the importance of a personalized nutrition approach. Bringing together results from 26 studies on the interaction of dairy intake and a small number of genetic variants, the authors have identified the potential for different sensitivities to the health effects of dairy foods based on an individual's genetic make-up.

Federal funding for research on nutrient stewardship in Corn Belt
Recent funding in the amount of $1 million from the Foundation for Food & Agriculture and a $1 million matching grant from the 4R Research Fund will be used to provide a greater understanding of the balance needed between the use of nutrients and the environment in the Corn Belt through science-based management, according to an announcement from the University of Illinois.
The "4R" concept is to use the right fertilizer source at the right rate, at the right time and in the right place to increase production while minimizing nutrient losses and enhancing environmental protection.
Using an established protocol, eight replicated drainage studies will be conducted across the Midwest and a site in Ontario. Two of the studies will be done by researchers from the University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer & Environmental Sciences.
