National Dairy Council's new product competition accepting entries
ROSEMONT, Ill. - National Dairy Council (NDC) is seeking ideas for innovative dairy-based snacks from college students across the United States and Canada.
The goal of NDC's seventh annual new product competition is for students to develop a dairy-based snack that answers the evolving needs of today's consumer and emphasizes these elements:
- Nourishment: the need for daily sustenance, long-term wellness or health management
- Pleasure: snacking fulfills emotional desires for enjoyment, craving and comfort
- Optimization: snacking occasions reflect a need to fulfill physical and mental performance demands
A combined $16,000 in cash prizes will be awarded: $8,000 (first place), $5,000 (second) and $3,000 (third). Contest details can be found at
USDairy.com/NewProductCompetition. The deadline to enter is Jan. 15, 2018.
The judging panel includes experts from across the dairy industry. Winning teams will be recognized at the American Dairy Science Association's annual meeting in June.

State ag secretaries Northey, Ibach named to USDA posts
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has three more nominated individuals named by President Donald Trump to serve under secretary of agriculture Sonny Perdue. The president announced Gregory Ibach as undersecretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs (MRP), Bill Northey as undersecretary for Farm Production and Conservation (FPAC), and Stephen Vaden as USDA's general counsel.
Perdue said earlier in the week it is a "tragedy" that he is the only Senate-confirmed person at USDA as of Labor Day -- months into his term. So far, only his nominees for deputy secretary, Steve Censky, and his undersecretary for trade, Ted McKinney, and Sam Clovis for USDA's chief scientist have been formally nominated, while none have received a Senate confirmation hearing or full Senate vote.

NIFA invests $12.6M to train future ag science professionals
WASHINGTON, D.C. September 1, 2017 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) today announced $12.6 million to support the training of 55 doctoral candidates and 52 postdoctoral scholars. Funding is made through NIFA's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), authorized by the 2014 Farm Bill. Read the

Dairy cattle welfare council - webinar series
Consumers today are very different than they used to be, yet have a strong interest in where their food comes from, including how food animals are raised and handled. To help build consumer trust in dairy products, the Dairy Cattle Welfare Council (DCWC) is pleased to announce continuation of the 2017 webinar series. These educational sessions will be available to attendees from across the United States as well as around the world.
