Presbyterians continue recovery effort in Houston following Hurricane/Tropical Storm Harvey

|
LOUISVILLE – The high water from Hurricane/Tropical Storm Harvey may be subsiding, but the long-term threat in Texas is far from over. In the Houston area, emergency crews are still going door-to-door looking for people who may still be in their homes. As the water recedes the threat of mold and contaminated water supplies from local chemical plants and refineries continues to complicate recovery efforts.

"Sweaty Sundays" Gifts of the Heart Project to Aid Harvey Victims
|

In light of the immense devastation brought to Texas by Hurricane Harvey, the UPC Service Committee is organizing a significant response effort to support the work of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA). And thankfully, Christian Formation oversees a program where just such an effort can be launched:
Sweaty Sundays. You can help build clean up buckets and hygiene kits for those directly affected by Harvey by participating.
Sweaty Sundays is an inter-generational service project time, 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., open to all UPC members and friends. We will be assembling
Gifts of the Heart Clean-up Buckets & Hygiene Kits in the Youth Room September 10 and 17.
Our buckets and hygiene kits will be collected by Mission Presbytery and used in areas along the coast once recovery starts. We need in-kind donations to build these kits; please
download the PDA Gifts of the Heart shopping list and bring any of the listed items to the Youth Room Sunday mornings, or bring them to the church office anytime during office hours.

- Sweaty Sundays program participants (children, youth, and adults welcome!) will work to assemble these buckets from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. September 10 and September 17. A reminder that the Laudate Children's Choir begins at 9:15 am and other adult education classes begin at 9:30 am, so if you're looking for something to do during that time, join us in the Youth Room for Sweaty Sundays!
- Please consider donating items each week so we make sure our supply levels remain adequate to complete these projects.
- Feel free to get your neighborhood or workplace or school involved in collecting these materials! UPC is happy to provide documentation to employers or schools about the nature of this project.
- Please do not donate supplies that are not on these lists or that vary from any item-specific requirements.

Gifts of the Heart Cleanup Bucket
1 — 5-gallon bucket with resealable lid*(Value $75)
5 — scouring pads
7 — sponges, assorted sizes
1 — scrub brush
1 — pkg. cleaning towels (18 reusable, like Easy Wipes®)
1 — box dry laundry detergent, 50-78 oz.
1 — liquid concentrated household cleaner (like Lysol®), 12 oz.
1 — bottle liquid disinfectant dish soap (like Dawn®), 24-28 oz.
1 — 1 pkg. clothespins, 48-50 Clothesline, two 50 ft. or one 100 ft.
5 — dust masks
2 pair — latex gloves (like Playtex®)
1 pair — work gloves
1 — 24 to 28 count roll heavy-duty trash bags (30-45 gallon, remove from carton)
1 — bottle insect repellant (pump, drops or lotion; not aerosol), 6-9 oz.
Please purchase all liquids in plastic bottles. Send only new, unopened materials. Put all items in the plastic bucket, packed securely to avoid damage during shipment, and seal lid with packing tape.
*Some local fast-food restaurants are willing to give pickle buckets (or other 5-gallon buckets with re-sealable lids) or offer them for a small fee. These can be washed out and used for the cleanup buckets.

Gifts of the Heart Hygiene Kit
(Value $15)
1 — hand towel (approximately 16" x 28", no fingertip or bath towels)
1 — washcloth
1 — wide-tooth comb (remove from package)
1 — nail clipper (UPDATE: nail clippers with metal files or emery boards attached are now accepted; remove from package)
1 — bar of soap (bath size in wrapper)
1 — toothbrush (in original packaging)
10 — Band-Aids® or other adhesive bandage strips
Please do not add toothpaste to the Hygiene Kit. Toothpaste which has an extended expiration date will be added to international Hygiene Kit shipments just prior to shipment. Seal all items in a one-gallon plastic bag with a zipper closure.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) continues to be in touch with presbytery leadership in New Covenant, Mission, and South Louisiana Presbyteries. National Response Teams are being deployed into the affected regions when it is safe to do so.

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.
The anchor is one of the oldest symbols of the Christian faith, suggesting
steadfastness
, and
stability
in times of turbulence and change. Through the centuries the anchor became the symbol associated with Hope.
In the Faith and Life Class this fall, our theme will be
Anchored in Hope
, as we are reminded by the writer of Hebrews that our hope in Christ is the anchor of our souls. We will be exploring how that hope may strengthen us in five dimensions of our contemporary world: memory, truth, community, suffering, and solidarity.
Join us on September 10 for a continuation of the discussion of the recent session of the Texas Legislature led by Bee Moorhead, Executive Director of Texas Impact, and Pastor Krystal Leedy. We’ll look how our faith has an impact on legislation, and how we speak truth to power.
The Faith & Life class meets in Room 201, upper level. Join us for coffee and fellowship beginning at 9:00. a.m. Lecture and discussion begins at 9:30 a.m. All are welcome!

Tuesday Evening Bible Study News
|

Rally Day has come and gone. Hurricane Harvey is slowly leaving. Labor Day is here. Tuesday Evening Bible Study will resume for the fall on Tuesday September 19, at the usual time and place (7:00 p.m., Fellowship Hall). Our curriculum is the Parables, all of them. If a parable appears in more than one Gospel we will read them together. I will bring in Bill Greenway’s fascinating reading of some of the parables, as well as the commentary of a Jewish scholar of Christianity, in addition to my usual sources.
For openers I am planning on reading and discussing three parables per class. We may go slower or faster, and of course some parables are more difficult or more important than others. The goal is to read and discuss them all thoughtfully before Thanksgiving week. This should be a fun semester. Bring your friends.

We invite those who are mourning to attend the Faith & Grief Gatherings to join us for the Austin Gathering the second Thursday of the month from noon to 1:00 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church’s Fellowship Hall located at 3208 Exposition Boulevard. This month's meeting will be held on Thursday, September 14.

New Adult Christian Formation Class
|
|
This fall UPC will offer a new Adult Christian Education course--
The Way
--
which is what some early Christians called Christianity before it became Christianity. The class will meet every Sunday from September 3 to December 10, and from January 14 to May 27, 2018. Classes will be held in Fellowship Hall and run from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Jonathan Eddison will lead the class.

The Present Word Study
"Covenant with God"
|
|
This quarter,
The Present Word class offers studies on the theme "Covenant with God." It considers the major covenants that God makes with people on behalf of the earth and the human community. Beginning with Noah, God promises benevolence toward creation. Similar commitments are made with Abram, Phinehas, and Ezekiel. Ultimately, the covenant forms the foundation for the coming Messiah and salvation for the world. Unit I, "Signs of God's Covenants" Unit II, "Called into Covenant with God" Unit III, "An Everlasting Covenant."
The class is led by Roscoe Overton, and meets in Room 3, lower level, Sundays at 9:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to participate!
