We have some exciting news to share with you! Starting on Thursday, and continuing throughout our temporary closure, we'll be offering new release films available for home viewing. This virtual cinema experience allows you to watch great new titles on your home screen while directly supporting Amherst Cinema. The cost of the digital "ticket" is split between the film distributor and Amherst Cinema—just like with a ticket purchased at our box office. Visit our website for all the details about how to enjoy these virtual screenings and read on for this week's titles.

FANTASTIC FUNGI is a vivid journey into the mysterious subterranean world of mycelium and its fruit—the mushroom. Watch the film this Thursday and catch one of three live-streamed Q&As throughout the day with director Louie Schwartzberg and mycologist Paul Stamets. And NO DATA PLAN follows Miko Revereza, who has lived in the United States illegally for 20 years, as he takes the train from Los Angeles to New York in this critical moment of hostility against migrants in the country he has come to know as home.

We're thrilled to share that our Visual Media Developer, Melissa McClung, has a short film competing in the Ann Arbor Film Festival (AAFF). Best of all, you can watch Melissa's film, LOUIE'S ANTIQUES, and all other AAFF films for free during the live-streamed, six-day festival, which starts today. Listen. Times are kind of stressful, and right now I need comfort media. I’m sure I’m not alone here, and it’s why I’m recommending my old standby, THE MUPPET MOVIE. It’s funny (I can recite the whole thing). It’s kind (a great family flick). It’s got some amazing cameos (I won’t spoil them)! If you’ve never seen it, now’s the time. If you have seen it, I promise it’s still good — even after the fifth watch in a week.

Penny Lane, an excellent documentarian and frequent guest of Amherst Cinema, tells the true story of John Romulus Brinkley, a Depression-era small-town doctor who "discovers" he can cure impotence by transplanting goat testicles. The use of animation provides a unique means of storytelling in a movie that needs to be seen to be believed.

THE MUSIC OF STRANGERS: YO-YO MA AND THE SILK ROAD ENSEMBLE

THE MUSIC OF STRANGERS is a stirring and entertaining portrait of the Silk Road Ensemble with electrifying performances by several of the member musicians, especially founder Yo-Yo Ma. The film provides an intimate and at times wrenching view into how the performers came together from around the world. This documentary also probes the power of music and culture to connect us — to take us to the deepest parts of our being so that we can share our common humanity. This film is just so wonderful on so many levels that it’s nothing less than extraordinary.
