HOW CHILDREN LEARN ABOUT RACE AND HOW ADULTS CAN HELP
|
There is a myth in popular culture that children are "colorblind" or don't notice race. This leads many parents, families, and educators to avoid discussing race and racism with young children or to be unsure how best to do so. At
1:30 PM
on
Saturday, February 8th
,
Dr. Erin Winkler
will present research on children's understandings of race and how parents, families, and educators can help children understand racial identity, racism, and racial inequities in age-appropriate and empowering ways. We hope you'll join us for this important talk.

MILWAUKEE MAYHEM: MURDER AND MYSTERY IN THE CREAM CITY'S FIRST CENTURY
|
From murder and matchstick men to all-consuming fires, painted women, and Great Lakes disasters, historian and author
Matthew Prigge
will offer a new perspective on Milwaukee's early years on
Monday, February 24th
at
6:30 PM
. Matthew will focus on the strange and brutal tales of mystery, vice, murder, and disaster, and will present these stories as they were recounted to the public in the newspapers of the era, using the vivid and often grim language of the times to create an engaging and occasionally chilling narrative of a forgotten Milwaukee.

Did you know that Dr. Seuss's birthday, March 2nd, is celebrated as National Read Across America Day?

Saturday, February 29th. Festivities kick off at
10:30 AM with a Celebrity Read-In. Enjoy Seuss-tastical snacks, crafts, and games like Pin the Mustache on the Lorax and Green Egg Golf. Balloons, tattoos, and a prize drawing will add to the fun. All ages are invited to join in the celebration!

FROM THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
|
During the winter, it can be hard to find joy - even if you like winter, which I do. February always feels like a welcome respite to me, until March arrives, and it's still winter.
At the library, we hope to offer you both respite and joy all year long. Here you'll find something or someone that makes you smile, feel connected to others, or feel connected to yourself. We've got good books, music, and movies to share and enjoy. We've got comfy seats with sunny views. Plus, we've got the internet, which enables a lot of things that make us happy these days, from completing the daily crossword to emailing with family around the world.
Come in and find some joy at the library today!
Emily Vieyra, Assistant Director
