PARISH

***
The St. John's parish has embarked on a renovation project. We are refurbishing the wood and painting the exterior of the breezeway and the back side of the main building.

The scraping, sanding and priming continues, as does the replacing of the rotted wood (more was found than had been expected.) We continue to need folks to help in the evening and supplies are provided. Please call Andrew Wade (703-477-8980) for more information and to find out which days people will be here to work. Many thanks go to all who have been giving of their time and talent. We will need lots of folks to help with the painting when that time comes.

Remember to change our address
For those of you who mail in your pledges, please use our street address (5649 Mt. Gilead Road, Centreville, VA  20120). We no longer have our post office box. Note that the post office box is printed on the pledge envelopes so you will need to change that. We do have stickers with our street address on the back table in the church that you can use on your pledge envelopes. If you have your bank send us your pledge, please let them know about our change of address.

Sunday, July 30
The Vestry has designated Sunday, July 30 for a special emphasis on our food collection for Western Fairfax Christian Ministries. Summer is a hard time at WFCM as not as much food is donated from churches and other organizations. Those who already regularly donate food on Sundays to WFCM, please consider adding a few more items on this one Sunday. If you do not usually donate food, please consider bringing in a few items on July 30, and then try to make it a weekly habit. (A list of needed items are in the Community section of these E-Notes.)

Yearly audit almost complete
Many thanks go to Penny Parker, David Weir and Catherine Packard for their hard work on the parish audit. This is something that must be done once a year, and we are fortunate to have these three people who are knowledgeable about audits and willing to give of their time. Thanks!

A regional youth group is forming!
Clergy and youth from several Episcopal churches in our region gathered a week ago at St. Peter's in the Woods to begin making plans for a combined youth group. Several of the churches, including St. John's, do not have enough junior and senior high youth to have our own youth group. By joining together, we will have enough youth to plan activities, service projects and discussions, probably meeting once a month. Our first event will be a "kick-off" fun event at St. Peter's in the Woods in Fairfax Station on Saturday, September 16 from 5-7 PM. More details will be forthcoming. Many thanks go to Cecelia and Diane Sellars, who joined Carol, for representing St. John's.

Education for Ministry - still looking for a few more people
EfM is a program for adult Christian formation through theological education and reflection written by the School of Theology at the University of the South, Sewanee, TN. All that's needed is a desire to learn and grow in your faith. There is a good amount of reading to be done each week, but no tests. The topics of study are Old Testament, New Testament, Church History, and Theology. The entire program is 4 years, but each participant signs up for a year at a time. Interested?  Please speak with Carol as soon as possible as the group is forming now. The group will be starting in September and we have 6 people so far......want to join us?

Many thanks to all those who have contributed backpacks for students in need at Centreville High School. We had committed to collecting 25 backpacks and we have collected 30! If you have bought a backpack that you want to contribute, please bring it to the church office by Tuesday, July 25 so we can take them over to the school.

The Seventh Sunday after Pentecost

The First Reading:
Genesis 28:10-19a
God appears to Jacob in a dream, making a covenant with him, continuing the promises he made to Jacob's forefathers; a great nation of descendants and the blessing of all people of the earth through that nation.

The Epistle:
Romans 8:12-25
We are empowered by the Holy Spirit to do the good and the right, though a choice for righteousness may often result in suffering. We live in hope of God's coming glory.

The Psalm: 139: 1-11, 22-23

The Gospel:
Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43
The hard truth of the parable of the wheat and the tares encourages us to live in faithful humility, knowing evil surrounds us while this broken world endures, but it does not overcome.

Coalition to Stop Gun Violence
More Virginians are killed annually by gunfire than in car accidents. The "Coalition to Stop Gun Violence" seeks to create educational awareness, outreach and a dialogue for gun violence prevention through the special interest license "Stop Gun Violence." Delegate Marcus Simon will submit legislation for the approval of this special license plate to get the approval of the Virginia General Assembly. Visit their website at  http://www.stopgunviolence.info. The application for the new license plate can be found at www.dmv.state.va.us/webdoc/pdf/vsa10.pdf.
