Do running shoes matter?

The short answer is, yes, they matter. Patients often ask physicians for sneaker recommendations. There are so many running sneakers on the market and a lot of different brands out there. There is no one-size-fits all when it comes to running sneakers, but it’s important to find the proper shoe for your foot and activity level. If you aren’t running in proper sneakers, you’re at risk for injuries involving numerous different muscle groups and tendons.

Foot Type

Physicians can help determine your foot-type which will contribute to finding the right running sneaker for you. Running stores will also provide a similar type of assistance so you can ensure you get the right shoe. Typically, you’ll have to walk or run on a treadmill for them to analyze you.

People tend to have pronate, neutral or supinate foot patterns. Pronators are flat-footed people who tend to gravitate toward a higher stability sneaker. Neutral runners often can wear many different types of sneakers. Supinators have high arches and are best suited in a cushioned running sneaker that provides flexibility. There are so many different shoes to choose from in all of the above categories.

Branding

A lthough there a lot of brands out there, statistics can show you which brands are most dominant in the running sneaker department. Currently, Nike dominates the market, however most marathon runners actually wear Asics and Brooks running sneakers. Nike could potentially dominate the market due to fashion and trends, rather than actual functionality. Pick a brand you feel comfortable in that’s also reputable among runners.

Types of sneakers

One of the most important things to consider when buying running sneakers is determining what their main purpose is. To avoid injuries such as plantar fasciitis or overuse, you want to find a sneaker that’s made specifically for running. A lot of athletic sneakers are branded as cross-trainers, however aren’t conducive for long-distance running. Running sneakers tend to be lighter and have a sole cushion since they’re made to run in mostly a straight direction. Cross trainers tend to be heavier and are used for functional training, weight training, and other types of workouts.

Injuries

Some of the common injuries runners suffer from when wearing the wrong footwear include:
·         Runners Knee
