Pollinator Education Session
When:  Saturday August 4, 2018-  10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Where:  **NOTE: The first part of this class will be held at the Caldwell County Public Library (120 Hospital Ave NE, Lenoir, NC) and the second part will be at Unity Park and Community Gardens (1519 College Ave SW, Lenoir, NC). Participants will provide their own transportation between the library and garden.

Did you know that 75% of the world's food crops depend in part on pollinators? Join Caldwell Extension Master Gardeners and the Caldwell County Beekeepers' Association for an educational session all about pollinators, their importance, and what you can do to protect them. 

The class will start with an indoor session in Room 2 at the Caldwell County Public Library at 10 am. Then at 11 am, participants will caravan to Unity Park and Community Gardens to see the newly established pollinator garden and learn about honeybees. Light refreshments will be served.

Tuesday, August 7, 2018: Easy to grow Grains and Beans- Want to move beyond veggies and fruits? This class will explore easy to grow grains and beans suitable for home production.

Tuesday, August 28, 2018: Fall Vegetable Gardening- Gardening doesn't end with summer! We can grow many vegetables in the fall including greens, broccoli, cabbage and more. Come help us plant and take home transplants for your home garden! 

Tuesday, September 11, 2018: All about Peppers! - Love hot peppers? Come and see a variety of peppers growing at UPCG. We will discuss growing and preservation methods. 

*Tuesday, September 25, 2018: Soils (at the Caldwell County Public Library Meeting Rooms)- Healthy soils are the key to growing healthy plants. Come learn about managing soil for healthy plants and fertilizers for home use.   

Tuesday, October 2, 2018: Grow your own Superfoods: Ginger & Turmeric- Love ginger? Are you trying to incorporate more turmeric in your diet? Growing your own supply is an easy way to ensure a good supply of these flavors throughout the year. Come learn how to grow and store ginger and turmeric in our climate!

 All Classes will be held at 5:30 pm at the Unity Garden - 1519 College Ave, SW, Lenoir *unless otherwise noted

Take Control
When: Thursday's, July 12-August 16, 2018
Where: Caldwell Ag Center/ Caldwell Meeting Rooms- Room 2

Participants are enjoying a recipe of roasted potatoes and carrots flavored with savory herbs and spices instead of salt which goes in hand in hand with the lesson Take Control of Your Sodium. See recipes below. This is the 3rd class out of 6 sessions. Upcoming classes include Control YOUR Fat, Reduce YOUR added Sugar, and Increase Your Dairy and Stay in Control. 

Each lesson includes: 
  • In-depth information about why the behavior is important for managing chronic disease
  • Strategies for adopting the behavior
  • 3-5 minute physical activity break
  • Opportunity for sharing and celebrating
  • Suggestions for taking control of one's health
  • Guided discussion of strategy for the week
Each participant receives:
  • Eat Smart, Move More Take Control Handouts- each lesson comes with a handout that summarizes the primary goals from each lesson along with a featured recipe.
  • Eat Smart, Move More Take Control Weekly Action Plan- a one page document that will allow participants to write down their goal and track their weekly actions/strategies.
  • Other materials- that support the message of the curriculum ( such as water bottles).

Here are 2 seasoning recipes to flavor healthy, roasted vegetables.

Spicy Steps to Health Seasoning:
1 Tbsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp basil
1 tsp sage
1/2 tsp thyme
1/4 tsp salt (optional)

Savory Steps to Health Seasoning:
2 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp thyme
1/2 tsp oregano
1/2 tsp sage
1/4 tsp salt (optional)

Directions for roasting vegetables

1. Select one or more of a combination of vegetables.

2. Cut vegetables the same size so they cook evenly.

3. Toss with 1 tablespoon of olive oil or canola oil, and 2-3 teaspoons of one or a combination of spices.

4. Place on a nonstick cooking pan ( or pan lined with foil for easier clean-up) and roast at 425 Degrees for 25-40 minutes. Give the vegetables a little space between each piece.

5. Halfway through the cooking time, stir the vegetables to ensure even cooking.

Coyote Management Workshop

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission, along with Burke County Cooperative Extension and USDA Wildlife Services, is holding a coyote conflict management workshop for landowners.

Biologists will discuss:
❖ Coyote biology and behavior
❖ Practical, non-lethal methods to prevent/reduce coyote conflicts
❖ Laws and regulations on taking of coyotes
❖ Basic trapping techniques to address problem coyotes

August Gardening Tips

Plants in Flower
  • Crapemyrtle, Rose-of-Sharon, Peegee Hydrangea, Abelia, Canna, Dahlia, Trumpet Creeper, Cardinal Flower, Butterfly Weed, Phlox, Cleome, Hosta, Liriope and summer annuals
Fertilizing
  • Strawberries will benefit from a feeding of nitrogen fertilizer this month.
  • Do NOT fertilize shrubs in August, September, October or November.
Planting
  • Plant pansy seed this month in flats for planting in the landscape in September.
  • Spider lily (lycoris), colchicum (autumn crocus) and sternbergia bulbs should be planted in August.
  • Sow seed of the following perennials: hollyhock, delphinium and stokesia to produce healthy plants for next spring.
  • Continue repotting house plants.
  • Divide and transplant cannas. liriope, and Ajuga.
  • Plant the following fall vegetable plants this month: beets, Chinese cabbage, cucumber, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, mustard, radish, rutabaga, spinach, squash and turnip.
Pruning
  • Do not prune shrubs in August, September, or October.
  • Remove dead heads in garden to stimulate blooming.
  • Remove dead and damaged wood from trees.
Spraying
  • Spray the following landscape shrubs for the following insect pests: arborvitae and juniper(spider mites), azalea and pyracantha (lace bug).
  • Continue with rose spray program.
  • Peach and nectarine trees need a trunk spray for peach tree borers at the end of August.
  • Spray the following fall vegetables for insects: broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower (worms), squash (borers).
  • Continue weekly sprays on bunch grapes and tree fruits. .
  • Control the following woody weeds by spraying them with the recommended herbicide: greenbriar, kudzu, trumpet creeper and wisteria.
Lawn Care
  • Treat all lawn areas for grubs. Use the recommended insecticides.
  • In late August, prepare the lawn areas for seeding if you plan to have a tall fescue or bluegrass lawn.
Propagation
  • Cuttings of your favorite shrubs can still be taken in August.
Specific Chores
  • If you are planning to do some fall landscape planting, be sure you have a planting plan prepared.
  • Continue watering favorite landscape plants and your vegetable garden if dry weather persists.
  • Begin the construction of a compost bin.
  • Dig Irish potatoes this month.
  • Turn your compost pile.
  • Make sure azaleas stay well watered because they are forming next years flower buds.
