Starting this Sunday February 9, Donuts + Faith in Real Life, the Sunday gathering for St. John's middle school and high school students, will start meeting every week at 10:00 a.m. in the youth room on the second floor of the Parish House. We hope to see you for this fun and inspiring chance for youth to get to know one another, explore their faith-and eat donuts!
When this new program kicked off in the fall, we met only on the 3rd Sunday of the month. The number of youth attending has been growing steadily and sustainably, and we are thrilled to have been asked by parents move it to the more consistent weekly format.
Stay tuned for more about the group's next service project and other youth events that we are planning.

to Receive Pathways Through Lent

We invite you to share your thoughts on the season of Lent by writing a brief reflection for our online daily devotional. Entries may be written individually or as a group (e.g. on behalf of a committee or a family) and should be no more than 250 words long. Your reflection can be inspired by the appointed scripture verse of the day (which we will share when we confirm your assigned date) or some other Lenten or spiritual topic.
Submissions are due by Friday, February 21,
so we can launch the devotional on Ash Wednesday, February 26.

Community Building Potluck Suppers

St. John's will continue its popular parishioner potluck suppers in the New Year! The Rev. Rob Fisher, his wife Sarah Wood, the Rev. Jane Hague, and the Rev. Savannah Ponder will attend. St. John's Women's Retreat

This year we are excited to welcome our own, the Rev. Jane Hague, who will lead us in a deep reflection of the poems of Mary Oliver. At this retreat we will enjoy fellowship as we explore the spirituality of the poetry and writings of Mary Oliver. Oliver gives us through her words

Jane's goals for this retreat are:
* To be present and open to God.
* To learn to use prayer and poetry as a method of
worship and
deepening into God.
* To appreciate Mary Oliver as a poet and spiritual
writer.
We welcome all women in the St. John's community and even friends and family who might benefit from this special gathering of women. Becoming part of the St. John's "Sisters" is not just joining us in retreat, it is also about becoming part of a supportive group of women who are there for each other in times of good and challenge. The retreat is limited to 25 women.
The rooms are cozy with ensuite bathrooms, and are generally shared (really, it's ok!) with healthy, generous meals, walks on the beach and the opportunity to rest, reflect and connect. The cost covers lodging and meals Friday dinner through Sunday lunch.
The retreat cost is $290
and is due by Monday, February 24 by check.

The 2020 Spring Adult Inquirers' Class

If you would like to be baptized, confirmed, or received into membership in the Episcopal Church at St. John's, we invite you to join the 2020 Spring Adult Inquirers' Class. The two-day class will meet on two Saturdays, March 14 and March 21, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. both days. The Rev. Rob Fisher, Rector of St. John's, will lead the sessions. Anyone -- newcomer or longtime parishioner -- interested in learning more about our Christian faith and life, the Episcopal tradition, and the ministry of St. John's Church, is encouraged to attend.

As part of our faith in the workplace outreach, the Rev. Will Morris would like to gauge interest in joining a study group/book club to discuss work-related issues and dilemmas. Would you like to get together for one hour most months to discuss a chapter in Will's book, Where is God at Work?, and share with others your views on the issues as you find them (or found them; or imagine them) in any workplace with which you are familiar? The subjects that Will covers range from your boss to retirement; from what happens if you have to answer a difficult email to what happens if you are asked to lie; from the relevance of the bible to your work (e.g., the parable of the talents) to the theological implications of open plan and hot desking!
To be very clear this is open to all, wherever you work, if you no longer work, of if you have never worked. All that is required is an interest in where God might be in the workplace.

During Lent, we will be employing an early church practice called "Agape dinners" to provide members of St. John's with an opportunity to gather in a member's home, share a meal together, and reflect on the significance of Lent in their lives. We will be organizing the dinners by neighborhood so that members who live near each other can get to know each other better. If you are interested in participating, please

We will meet in the second floor teens classroom of the Parish House at 6:45 p.m. to discuss Spying on the South: An Odyssey Across the American Divide by Tony Horwitz. St. John's South Africa Trip to
the Kwasa Centre
|
St. John's will travel again to the Kwasa Centre in South Africa this summer. The Rector will lead the trip, which will include spending time at Kwasa with its founder and Rector, the Rev. Sharron Dinnie. Kwasa, now known as the Kwasa College, is a growing Anglican pre-primary and primary school serving children from a nearby informal settlement. St. John's has supported and been in partnership with Kwasa since 2004 and has made several mission trips there, as well as hosting students and teachers from Kwasa on a regular basis.

As we welcome 2020, we have exciting ministry awaiting us at St. John's. Our annual stewardship giving provides much of the financial support that make all of our ministries possible, and the information provided by pledges allows our church leaders to budget with confidence. A nonprofit leader of note has described charitable giving as a kind of alchemy, a magical transformation of the giver's resources into a public expression of their values. We have this good fortune each year -- each week! -- to see our gifts to St. John's turn into beautiful music, inspirational sermons, meaningful outreach, Christian education, and much more.

We Are Flushing Our Forests Away
We don't usually think about toilet paper until it runs out, but we should. Its ubiquitous presence and low cost misrepresent the dramatic and irreversible toll it is taking on our boreal forests. As with paper towels discussed last week, those forests are also the favored source for virgin softwood pulp for tissue products, and in the past 20 years, an area the size of Ohio has been logged, some 28 million acres. Alternatives to this tree-to-toilet-paper pipeline exist. Tissue products made from recycled materials emit a third of the greenhouse gasses as that from virgin pulp, and are becoming available at neighborhood stores - see Giant's Nature's Promise line, for example. Check that what we buy has recycled content, and the more of that the better. When we buy those popular (and comfortable) brands without recycled material, we are literally flushing our forests down the drain. Use this NRDC scorecard to check our favorite brands for sustainability.

The Parish Choir, a dedicated corps of volunteer musicians who provide musical leadership for Sunday morning services, welcomes new members. Midweek rehearsals are most Thursday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with a light supper of sandwiches provided at 6:30 p.m. There is a straightforward voice trial for admission, but the main qualification is your interest in serving St. John's in its music program.

February Opportunities

Communities in Schools, a St. Johns Outreach partner, will continue to provide tutoring for Cardozo students on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, from 3:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., through February 13. The February Food Market will be held on Tuesday, February 11. Finally, report card conferences will take place on Thursday, February 13. Volunteers will sit down in one-to-one meetings with students to discuss their reports. In the past, St. Johns parishioners have enjoyed helping out in this way.

Washington Interfaith Network (WIN)

St. John's is a founding member of the Washington Interfaith Network (WIN), a faith-based, multi-racial, interfaith grassroots organization dedicated to improving the life of all residents of the District of Columbia. WIN leaders have decided to become involved in making certain that the District cures the horrendous conditions in the 144 public housing units that serve the District's neediest residents and increases the number of units. The DC Housing Authority is facing $2 billion in deferred maintenance. Residents have to endure lead poisoning, rat infestations, safety issues, and lack of heat and cooling. There is also the threat of further loss of units. This notice is an alert about this WIN campaign and an invitation to become involved - again for many and for the first time for newer parishioners.
