Edgar Spent 6 Years in Foster Care

Edgar spent six years in foster care, beginning when he was just five years old. Moved from home to home, assigned to different caseworkers and changing schools constantly, Edgar's first break came when he was 11 years old and was assigned a Dallas CASA volunteer. Could his volunteer help find Edgar a permanent, loving home?  Read more on Dallas CASA's blog .
Bilingual Dallas CASA Volunteer Finds Common Ground

Amanda Paredes was looking for a way to give back. She'd tried serving meals or passing out water bottles, but she was ready for a deeper, more lasting connection and found Dallas CASA. Over the past five years, she has worked six cases involving eight children, most of whom came into care speaking Spanish. Raised speaking both English and Spanish at home, Amanda says making connections through shared language and culture with the children she serves has been critical. Read more at Dallas CASA's blog.

Dallas CASA to Honor Former Executive Director and President Beverly Levy

Dallas CASA will honor retired executive director and president Beverly Levy with the Caroline Rose Hunt Cherish the Children Award at the agency's annual award luncheon.  The Cherish the Children luncheon is Friday, April 3 at the Omni Dallas Hotel and is hosted by Dallas CASA Children's Council.

Retired since 2014, Beverly led Dallas CASA for more than half of its 40-year history, bringing her unique blend of care and nurturing, relationship-building and relentless cheerleading to the role.  Beverly valued children above all else, and that legacy lives on at Dallas CASA today. Dallas CASA will thank her for putting the children of Dallas County first and for positioning Dallas CASA and the agency's remarkable volunteers at the forefront of child welfare. Dallas CASA is currently forming the host committee for the event. If you'd like to participate , please email Michelle Mai.

Luncheon co-chairs are Leigh Danley and Leslie Wayne. Guest speaker will be Liz Murray, author of Breaking Night: A Memoir of Forgiveness, Survival, and My Journey From Homeless to Harvard. Murray transformed her own life of despair into one of remarkable strength, determination and hard-won success. Today a mother, wife and college graduate, Murray speaks powerfully about the impact of having advocates in the lives of vulnerable children.  For more information, visit My Sweet Charity or Park Cities People .
Dallas CASA Launches Training to Fight Child Sex Trafficking

Dallas CASA debuted a new program to train community volunteers to advocate on behalf of trafficked and exploited children, a growing threat to the safety of children and teenagers, particularly those in foster care.  The first-of-its kind pilot program, co-created by Dallas CASA and California-based Saving Innocence, educates volunteers to recognize signs of trafficking victims as well as perpetrators. Advocates learn about safety planning, trauma, recruitment, victim manipulation and many other challenging issues, allowing them to better support and protect high risk and trafficked youth. The digital content of the training program is being made available to all 72 CASA programs in Texas.

"The particular children we serve are at an exceptionally higher risk of being victimized by commercial sexual exploitation," said Kathleen LaValle, president and CEO of Dallas CASA. "More than a set of procedures or instructions, this course is a tool box for our volunteer advocates. They can use these tools to provide the highest level of care and support to our community's most vulnerable children. The effort to combat human trafficking of the youth we serve begins with educating and equipping our volunteers."
