Excess Food = Healthy Meals for the Hungry

During the first half of this year, Saving Grace rescued and redistributed 360,652 pounds of nutritious perishable food that fed the hungry in our community.
This brings the total amount of food rescued since Saving Grace began operations Sept. 30, 2013, to
1,683,201 pounds.
While the numbers are impressive, the real story is the impact these meals have on our community. Each pound of food rescued translates to one healthy meal served to children, seniors and families in need.
In Douglas County alone, one in seven people are food insecure. That's more than 75,000 of our neighbors who live in every ZIP code in the community. By connecting excess perishable food from grocery stores, caterers, event centers, wholesalers, restaurants and other food purveyors with our nonprofit partner agencies that feed the hungry, Saving Grace is leading a movement to feed hungry bellies rather than landfills.
Consider the impact food insecurity has on our neighbors:
- For every year a child lives with food insecurity, academic achievement decreases by 10 percent.
- 37 percent of people living below the poverty line in the metro area do not have access to affordable, healthy food, such as produce, fresh meat, fresh milk and eggs.
- Hospital and doctor visits are highest at the end of the month, when food insecurity is also the greatest.

Limited Number of Food for Thought Tickets Remain
Tickets are going fast for Saving Grace's first Food for Thought - A Rescued Food Experience event.
"Eat Healthy. Save the Environment" will be held July 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Eat Fit Go's Millard location, 4909 S. 135th Street.
Attendees will have an opportunity to:
- Sample Eat Fit Go cuisine that is being given a second life through Saving Grace's perishable food rescue program.
- Hear from Erik Bird, Eat Fit Go's chief attitude officer, on how eating healthy and donating excess foods also helps keep the environment healthy.
- Learn how to partner with Saving Grace to target hunger and food waste in our community.
Tickets for the July 27 event are $30 ($15 is tax deductible), and include food samples, wine and beer, and the program.
