2018 NYSCRC Sustainability Summit

October 18, 2018
Hearst Media Center, Albany, NY

Presented by NYSCRC in partnership with the Administration on Community Living, ARCH National Respite, NYSOFA and Lifespan of Greater Rochester.

The purpose of the Summit is to: strengthen state and community partnerships to sustain Lifespan Respite activities; develop strategies to maximize use of existing respite resources and identify and leverage new respite funds; engage in sustainability planning; and generate innovative activities for future development.

Consistent with other states' summits, this event aims to connect policymakers, researchers, family caregivers, and statewide partners to exchange knowledge and expertise, leading to the development of a statewide strategy for strengthening the respite care system for all individuals and caregivers, across the lifespan.

This is an Invitation  Event. We are seeking participants interested in this working Summit for disciplines across the age and disability Spectrum. For more information or a request to attend, please contact Doris Green

ARCH National Respite Conference

Illuminate Respite! The Call for Presentations is now open for the 2019 ARCH National Lifespan Respite Conference to be held in Buffalo, New York, April 30-May 2, 2019. Proposals for breakout sessions are being accepted until the deadline, September 1, 2018.

The ARCH National Respite Network and Resource Center and its co-hosts, the New York State Caregiving and Respite Coalition and the New York State Office for the Aging, invite you to  submit a proposal  to participate in the only national conference focused on shining a light on innovation and quality in respite services for family caregivers of children and adults.

The theme, Illuminate Respite! is inspired by the rich history of Buffalo, located on the shores of Lake Erie near Niagara Falls. In the late 19th century, Buffalo was the first city to implement widespread streetlights, earning it the nickname, "The City of Light." During this time Buffalo was a hub of innovation, using the natural power of Niagara Falls to bring light and growth to the city. This conference will provide a space to harness the power of the respite network to explore and formulate strategies to meet the respite needs of the nation's 43 million family caregivers.

We welcome proposals for breakout sessions on any aspect of planned or emergency respite service delivery, streamlined access, research, evaluation, policy, best practices or innovation.

National Transportation Coordination Survey

The National Center for Mobility Management (NCMM) is seeking input from state and local stakeholders on promising practices, barriers, and challenges around coordinated transportation. Coordinated transportation includes examples such as sharing vehicles among organizations or grouping trips among beneficiaries of two or more programs. Information gathered from this survey will be used for planning purposes by the Coordinating Council on Access and Mobility  (CCAM) federal interagency.  CCAM coordinates the efforts of the federal agencies that fund transportation services for older adults, individuals of low income, and people with disabilities. CCAM issues policy recommendations to improve the availability, accessibility, and efficiency of transportation provided by human service organizations. Survey Link

Understanding Trauma and it's Impact on Older Adults
A research paper by Misty Boldt, LMSW

Working with a Trauma Informed Care Professional (TICP) is important at any stage of life but appears to be more important later in the life. In my analysis, it has been identified a correlation between long term stress and health risks later in life. My findings to date indicate unstable relationships and developmental traumas are often identified. The purpose of an older adult working with a TICP is to allow for a relationship with a resilient and stable person in their life, which up to this point they may not have had and may not have been able to recognize as lacking in their life. The TICP is intended to help decrease the older adult's emotional distress by lowering anxiety levels and depression symptoms using a trauma informed and strength-based approach. Having a TICP use specialized tools like the ACE and LEST can screen older adults for trauma across their lifespans. These screens can be helpful to medical providers and caregivers in understanding why a person may behave the way they do or have certain reactions or outbursts to stimuli that isn't easily understood.
