Know Your Boat Liability Policies

Dear Members,

Even with the cold and snow, I am sure boat liability is a hot topic within your agency.  The Minnesota Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers were in attendance at the MN Day at the Hill Campaign a few weeks ago.  That day we just received notice about the Family Exclusion Bill that was going to try and make its' way through the Committees and possibly a vote by both houses.  The issue is not dead yet and per our Legislative Alerts we have teamed up with the Insurance Federation to oppose this legislation.

After discussing this issue with many of our colleagues, we have noticed many of our Company Partners have different Policy Language in regards to family exclusions on boat policies.  We highly recommend that you review your boat contracts and review not only the bodily injury section but also the medical payment section.  In our brief analysis of a number of boat policies, we have seen different language on the stand alone boat liability policies versus adding the boat to a homeowner's policy.  It is also a wise decision to look at the medical payments coverage limits available as well.

We believe our member companies are looking into their own policies as well and some of them will be communicating with you on how their policies work, if they have not already.  Dominic will keep us informed if this legislation begins to move again at the capitol.  If so, we will ask you to call your local representatives and explain to them the ramifications of this bill.

Issues like this are reasons why customers choose a Trusted Choice Independent Agent.

Sincerely,
