More dialogue needed on safeguarding common food names
Current policies on geographical indications (GI) are often woefully lacking in safeguards for common food and beverage names, creating an increasingly disruptive situation in global trade that unfairly favors some producers over others -- but an equitable approach is wholly achievable and should be pursued immediately. That was the message of Ambassador Allen Johnson, president of Allen F. Johnson & Associates, representing the Consortium for Common Food Names (CCFN) recently in Yangzhou, China, at the Worldwide Symposium on Geographical Indications.

Johnson called on the meeting organizer, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which is the lead organization examining global GI policies, to foster a broader dialogue on ways GI guidelines must respect the inherent rights of food producers to use generic names and comply with other international commitments. Johnson served as ambassador and chief agriculture negotiator at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative from 2001 to 2005.

U.S. ag producers showing more optimism
U.S. agricultural producers indicated their farm operations' financial positions are stronger than at this time in 2016, but expressed concerns that they might not meet their 2017 financial targets, according to a monthly producer survey conducted as part of the Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer.

The barometer, which is based on a survey of 400 U.S. agricultural producers, read 131 for the month of June - virtually unchanged from the April and May readings of 130.
Court denies rehearing on emissions reporting
A federal court denied a request from the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) and the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association (USPOULTRY) seeking a rehearing following a recent ruling issued by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit requiring additional waste emissions reporting requirements for concentrated animal feeding operations.

The court's ruling rejected an exemption from reporting under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) and the Emergency Planning Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA), two programs that are meant to inform the National Response Center and local first responders of hazards that may call for emergency action.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had provided an exemption from CERCLA reporting of low-level emissions of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide generated from the natural breakdown of animal manure after the agency's evaluation demonstrated that any emergency response to such emission reports was "unnecessary, impractical and unlikely."
