Takes Top Spot!

A birdie birdie finish on Sunday, July 15 solidified Daniel Shepherd's name in the history books as the 2018 Men's Tournament Champion. He has a 5-stroke victory over Wally Plywaczewski and Christian Lynn.

After the first round on Saturday, July 14, Shepherd held a 3 shot lead over Plywaczewski, Chris Jones and Michael Spenske; and a 4 shot lead over Lynn. As the rounds began on Sunday, Plywaczewski made his presence known to Shepherd as he birdied 3 of the first 8 holes, and took a 1 stroke lead at the time. That lead though was short lived as Plywaczewski triple-bogeyed the 9th hole and Shepherd calmly canned a 15-foot downhill putt for par - Shepherd back up by one.

While all this was going on in the first group, Lynn was just playing a steady game in the second group of the day, trying to chip away at Shepherd's lead. But in the end no one had an answer for Shepherd as he birdied #17 and #18 for a 5-stroke victory, and the title of 2018 Men's Champion. Congratulations Daniel!

Soil boring in progress.

Denise's Corner
Repairing the flood damage and stabilizing the shoreline

So...what's under there?

As part of our shoreline stabilization project, the TSC Testing Corporation found the answer to that question. On July 19, soil boring was performed and the information gleaned during that process will be used in the construction phase of the project. The plans are essentially complete and have been sent to the US Army Corp of Engineers, IDNR-OWR, and the City of St. Charles for permitting. The shoreline stabilization project is still on track with a tentative start date of October 2018. We can't wait to start this project as the front edge of #3 green continues to cave in at a rapid rate. Stepping down this edge into the river to retrieve golf balls is the biggest reason it's caving in, so please stay away from the edge.

A BIG thank you goes out the Parks turf crew for their help again this year in overseeding the flood damaged areas on the course. Everything was seeded on July 25, so now we just wait for germination. With the definition of insanity being "doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results", we've decided to research native plants that will withstand a flood instead of turf. Sounds like we have a project for next year!

As of July 29, we have released 56 Monarch butterflies, most of which we found as eggs. Our goal is to release 100 in 2018, so we're over half way there! We appreciate all of the positive comments from golfers and patrons of the Park District. Saving the world one Monarch at a time!

Finally, we extend a special thanks to staff members Alex and Malik for their dedication and hard work on the course this summer. We wish them well as they head back to school this week!
