TEACHING BODY CONTACT IN GIRLS HOCKEY
By
Mike Doyle, Special to Minnesota HockeyHockey, at any level, is a physical sport. That rings true for both the boys' and girls' game. Sometimes, teaching contact in the girls' game is overlooked because there's "no checking." However, contact shouldn't be ignored when developing youngsters and learning at an early age can help in the long run.  Jessica Christopherson, head coach of girls' hockey at Wayzata High School, and Winny Brodt-Brown, Minnesota's first recipient of the Ms. Hockey Award, weigh in on the importance of introducing body contact to girls.

Demystifying "No" Contact

Just because girls' and women's hockey is "no-check" doesn't mean there's no contact. However, because the rules don't allow for checking, often times the physical part of the sport is not taught at a young age. NEARLY 100 ILLINOIS WOMEN ARE PLAYING NCAA DIVISION I & DIVISION III COLLEGE HOCKEY
It's a testament to the players, coaches, and associations that so many of our young women from Illinois were able to realize their dream of playing NCAA College Hockey. Whether at Division I or Division III, each player is continuing her hockey careers along with obtaining the ever important college degree. As we went through the numbers and compared them to two seasons ago, a few interesting things popped up. In 2014-15, Illinois had 29 women playing Division I. This season those numbers jumped to 35 women! The Division III ranks also saw a jump in the numbers with 67 women playing this year as compared to 56 two years ago. Click buttons below to view lists of Illinois women playing NCAA hockey.
Congratulations to all our players for continuing their education and hockey careers! *

We have not forgotten that we have hundreds of women playing ACHA Club hockey as well. We will tally those numbers up for our readers in an upcoming issue of Girls Snapshot.
