Welcome Baxter, Beyoncé and Blue!
Please join us in welcoming our three newest sanctuary residents: Baxter, Beyonce and Blue! (Yes, we did let the summer campers throw in a few name suggestions!)
Baxter is a blind male duck who is about 3 years old. He was rescued in upstate New York as a baby, when his parents were trying to kill him because he was born without eyes. He was put in a chicken coop and was very lonely with the chickens (just think of how confused he must have been!). Beyonce and Blue were brought in for company, but the coop became too crowded as they grew. The trio was then surrendered to an animal shelter, and then transferred to Farm Sanctuary where they have been living. On July 22, they arrived at Heartland after a 13+ hour road trip!
We're honored that Heartland is sort of becoming "known" for rescuing and caring for blind ducks. We know that with trusting duck (and human) companions, along with a consistent routine and safe surroundings, they can absolutely flourish.
We love these three already - and all three need sponsors! If you'd like to help welcome a very special duck to our sanctuary, click

Meet Julie, Heartland's newest tour guide and ambassador
|
Meet Julie, Heartland's newest tour guide and ambassador! Julie grew up in Greenfield, Wisconsin and earned her degree in Elementary Education at UW-Madison. She has loved animals for as long as she can remember. Julie loved teaching Kindergarten and especially loved teaching themes and units about animals. Every time her class had a field trip to the farm, she never wanted to leave! After returning to the Madison area, Julie started volunteering at Heartland in April of 2018 and fell in love immediately and jumped at the opportunity to become an ambassador. Julie lives in Fitchburg with her husband, two children, three parrots and one floppy-eared bunny.

Internationally-known animal orthotist makes brace for April the goat
|
Our goat April is an older girl who had been struggling to get around because of a ligament tear caused by arthritis. We tried a couple of different braces for April, but she was still unsteady on her feet - until now!
April's new brace was custom-made by animal orthotist
Derrick Campana and Animal OrthoCare
in Sterling, Virginia. Derrick makes orthotics and prosthetics for all types of animals and is internationally known for his work. He’s made prosthetics and orthotics for many dogs, a mini horse, and even an elephant! And he's been featured on Animal Planet! Despite his busy schedule he was incredibly kind and helpful to work with.
Once we put April's brace on, she took off running! April's now more confident than ever. We are hopeful this brace will keep April active and happy for a long time!
