Book Reviews
Jackrabbit Smile
By Joe R. Lansdale
Reviewed by Sue Wilder
Hap and Leonard are celebrating Hap's marriage to Brett with a backyard barbecue. They are interrupted by Judith Mulvaney and her son who are seeking their help. Judith's daughter Jackrabbit has been living locally but estranged from the family for several years. Now she has gone missing
Hap and Leonard have misgivings about taking on the case. Judith and her son are white supremacists with a particular hatred of black people. Hap is a liberal gunslinging white trash rebel. Leonard is a gay, black, Republican veteran. Always needing money, they agree to investigate for a few days. As in their previous capers, mayhem ensues as they come up against a bunch of holy rollers, cultists, and just plain bad folks.
As in the previous 12 Hap and Leonard novels, Mr. Lansdale shows his mastery of the caper novel. The writing is excellent, the characters are well drawn, and the action is nonstop. Despite the humor, he addresses the dark side of racism expertly.
Mr. Lansdale has written over 30 books in various genres, including Edgar winners and superb standalone novels. The Hap and Leonard series, beginning with Savage Season, has always been a winner. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Saving Dabba
By Randy Rawls
Reviewed by Stephanie Saxon Levine
In book four of Randy Rawls' Beth Bowman Adventures, Saving Dabba,a homeless man's murder in a public park in Coral Lakes Florida becomes Beth's latest challenge. When more deaths occur and Beth's homeless friend, Dabba, is arrested for murder. Beth, convinced of Dabba's innocence, is intent on finding the murderer or murderers. To achieve her goal, she infiltrates a group that has as its mission the removal of the homeless from the streets of Coral Lakes.
Working with the Coral Lakes Police Department and with the help of Beth's doctor/boyfriend  and some homeless friends of Dabba's and Beth's, she puts herself in great danger, taking substantial risks for the sake of her friend.
Saving Dabba is an exciting and suspenseful read, with intriguing characters, settings that enhance the story without monopolizing the reader's attention, and a meaningful mystery for the protagonist to solve. Randy Rawls challenges us to explore our beliefs about the homeless among us, without being preachy. It's a tall order, but the author fills it to perfection.
The series can be read in any order, but, after reading Saving Dabba, may well want to enjoy others of the Beth Bowman Adventures.
Highly Recommended.  Signed by the author:$12.99

All the Beautiful Lies
By Peter Swanson
Reviewed by Sue Wilder
Harry Ackerson, just getting ready to graduate college, receives a call from his stepmother Alice. Harry's dad, Bill, is dead. Harry heads home to Maine for the funeral and to help with Bill's rare bookshop. Complications set in when the cause of Bill's death is changed from an accidental slip on some wet rocks to suspicious and a possible homicide.
The police investigation introduces the reader to a diverse cast of characters. Several are suspicious with possible motive or opportunity. Their backgrounds are related through chapters that are tagged Now or Then. The action is driven by obsession. The suspense is unrelenting and the ending is satisfying.
As with many successful thrillers, the ordinary is merely a facade for this dark story. The characters are well-drawn and the dialog is sharp. Mr. Swanson packs a lot of information in a book that is difficult to put down and can easily be read in a day. The now and then storytelling technique allows for a concise and effective narration.
All the Beautiful Lies is Mr. Swanson's 4th thriller, all standalones. All have interesting flawed characters, operating in dark stories full of obsession and revenge. Readers of Patricia Highsmith, B. A. Paris and Shari Lapena will enjoy this book.

The Temptation of Forgiveness
By Donna Leon
Reviewed by Stephanie Saxon Levine
In this, Donna Leon's twenty-eighth in the Commissario Guido Brunetti Mystery series, the author takes her readers deep into the attitudes and thought processes of her protagonist, a Venetian police officer.
Professoressa Crosera, a friend of Brunetti's wife, comes to Brunetti for help because she suspects her son of using, and perhaps dealing, drugs. Then, her husband is pushed down the steps of a bridge and suffers a serious brain injury.
In working on this case, Brunetti finds satisfaction, yet is saddened to realize that his fellow citizens of Venice seem to have lost trust in and respect for the police. What's more, Venice is changing in ways that displease him. Venetian souvenirs are increasingly made in China, and the stalls in the marketplace are disappearing. The entire city seems to have turned into a tourist trap.
This reader is enchanted by the manner in which Donna Leon makes the setting come alive. Although thoroughly engaged in the solving of the case, the reader is treated to a depth of insight into Brunetti's thought processes, as well as a guided tour of Venice, warts and all. That tour is so compelling that, at times, the reader feels as though (s)he is walking beside Brunetti, listening to him share his impressions.
I cannot say enough good things about The Temptation of Forgiveness, and all the Guido Brunetti mysteries. I've read and thoroughly enjoyed each book and eagerly await the next in this wonderful series. A MUST READ!
