April 2018 Newsletter
After many years of availability, it seems pet insurance has finally become a commonly understood option for pet owners. Most pet insurance plans cover unexpected health issues with your pet such as accident or illness preparing you financially to pursue treatment. Some plans also include preventative or wellness coverage to assist in the cost of more routine pet care. Considering insurance for your dog or cat?

Food Packages Pose Threats to Pets
As pictured above, and out of context, it could be considered comical. The silly dog digging through the trash for a scrap, gets his head stuck in a bag.... we've seen the image hundreds of times. The problem is, when no one's home to assist him, the ending can be deadly.
Chip or bread bags, cellophane wrappers, etc. pose a serious threat of suffocation to our pets; however a few simple solutions exist. The obvious, keep these items out of reach of pets whether through confining your pets to a closed off, safe space, or removing food and trash from their reach. Childproof locks and restraints on cabinets are also a great solution. Next, try creating family wide habits of tying bags in knots or ripping openings in both ends before disposing of them. This is a great solution for chip bags. Simply being aware and modifying your routine can make all the difference in the threat these items pose to your pets.
Addressing Fear and Anxiety in Pets
Thundershirts Make a Difference for Dogs

From April showers to summertime thunderstorms and general anxiety, Thundershirts may be just what your fearful friend needs.

These soft, flexible pressure wraps are designed to create a safe and drug-free calming effect in anxious, fearful, or hyper active dogs. Although it’s not known exactly how the Thundershirt works on fearful dogs, many say the pressure has a calming effect on the nervous system. We like to think of them like a giant, constant, comfy hug. After years of use with many dogs personally and professionally, we're here to tell you these shirts work! A survey of Thundershirt users show that over 85% of dogs show significant improvement of at least one anxiety symptom while wearing the Thundershirt.

Common uses include:
  • Thunderstorm, fireworks or noise fear or phobia
  • Fear of strangers or new places
  • Fear of being crated
  • Anxiety due to traveling or moving
  • Hyperactivity, over activity or excitability
  • Nervousness or anxiousness
  • Reactivity on the leash (barking at other dogs while on leash)
Feliway Relieves Stress You May Not Have Known Your Cat Struggles With

Many things can disturb your cat’s environment leading to stress. For instance, every time you move furniture, bring in new furniture, do a major housecleaning, home renovations, etc. the “happy messages” your cats leave themselves disappear and then they don’t feel at home anymore.

For some cats, multiple cat households can also grow to be a source of stress.

When stressed cats can become insecure and may hide, scratch or pee which in cat’s language, communicate stress.

If you feel that your cat is unhappy or suffering from cat stress, FELIWAY feline pheromone in home diffusers can likely help by restoring the “happy messages” in your home and comforting your cat.

FELIWAY also has developed a Multi-cat hemisphere formula which is specifically designed to mimic the same “harmony messages” produced by the mother cats when nursing kittens. This can naturally help alleviate tension and conflicts between cats in multi-cat homes.
