WELCOME TO RUTIZ FARMS
The farm stand is now operating under our "spring" hours...Tuesdays and Fridays, noon to 6 pm.
Saturdays, 10am to 4pm.
Eggs in this week's Harvest Box...this is a first! Our hens lead a pretty good life ( for a chicken anyhow )...getting a special GMO-free feed and scraps from the farm. They lay tasty eggs with dark orange yolks. Good time to stock up for easter eggs hunts. I realize that our brown and green eggs are not quite as easy to dye as white eggs...but be creative...use marking pens to draw designs on the eggs.
Here's a trick I ran across that will make perfect, easy to peel hard boiled eggs even using "fresh farm" eggs:
Steaming instead of boiling
Fill the bottom of your pot with water-the exact amount isn't important,. just make sure that there is enough water to keep the pot from boiling dry. ( yes, the 1st time I tried this my pot ran dry...not a good thing!).
Place the eggs in a colander or vegetable steamer, making sure you aren't submerging the eggs in the water. Bring the water to a boil, and place the lid on top.
Allow the eggs to steam for 20-22 minutes. Remove the colander (or steamer basket) from the pot and sumerge the eggs in cold water to halt the cooking process.
Once the eggs are cooled, they will peel easily!

What's in this week's Box
Grown on our farm using organic farming methods:
baby broccoli, radishes, fennel bulb, salad mix and potatoes,
The "Persian" type cucumbers are grown by Ocean breeze Farms in Nipomo...pesticide free.
The vine ripened tomatoes are grown by Debbie Chamberlin in the Salton Sea are of Southern California...picked fully ripe for great flavor...pesticide free.
The Zutano avocados are grown by Dave Righetti...pesticide free.
The apples are grown in Cuyama Valley by Cuyama Orchards...certified organic.
Use the fennel bulb as you might use an onion...cut up the white bulb portion and add to a stir fry...it will give you a mildly, sweet licorice flavor. You can also use the white bulb portion to make a salad by finely shaving and adding to salad greens.
The "Sierra Gold" potatoes are great for baking, roasting, mashing or frying. No need to peel off the outer skin, just scrub off the dirt and cook with the skins left on ( much of the nutrients in a potato are in the skins!). They have a nice sweet taste and a yellow, creamy insides.
