Laboratory Open House

Supporters of FAU and the College of Medicine received a sneak preview of the renovated COM laboratories at an Open House held March 20. Dean Phillip Boiselle, M.D. began the evening with a toast and presided over the ribbon cutting ceremony. Guests toured Dr. Janet Robishaw's renovated lab space and the newly formed shared facilities , which included the Cell Imaging Core, facilitator, Jenny Wei, Ph.D.; Molecular Core, facilitator, Massimo Caputi Ph.D.; Cell Analytics Core; facilitator, Michael Lu, Ph.D.; iPSC (induced pluri potent stem cell) Core, facilitator, Anna Stauffer, and Genomics Core. An Open House for FAU faculty, staff and students will be held the afternoon of April 25.

High School Donors Make an Impact

The donation by two high school students, to the College of Medicine's lab renovation, was particularly poignant. Friends Justin Hier and Matt Lipson, both 18, have been touched by cancer. Matt lost his mother to ovarian cancer when he was just 10 years old. The two seniors at Claire and Emmanuel G. Rosenblatt High School at the Donna Klein Jewish Academy decided to make a difference by creating the Hope 4 Moms Foundation to help families affected by cancer. Their first effort raised $5,000 and benefited the Cell Analytics Core. Their donation was matched by College of Medicine resulting in the purchase of a Moxi - Go, a mini flow cytometer used for cell analysis in cancer research.

Research Highlight: Andrew Oleinikov, Ph.D.

Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite. Left untreated, infected individuals can develop severe complications. Pregnant women have an increased susceptibility. Associate Professor of Biomedical Science, Dr. Andrew Oleinikov's main research interest is how malaria parasite proteins interact and interfere with the host system. He is also interested in vaccines, the pathogenesis of malaria, and novel anti-malarial drug development to diminish the impact of the parasite on the host. When asked about the greatest challenge to his research, Dr. Oleinikov replied, "The system is very complex. The parasite is 'smart' and adaptable and it really fights the immune system." Dr. Oleinikov is currently the PI for three NIH grants, one of which is a multi-PI award.
Healthfirst Spring Wrap-up

Launched in August of 2017, the HealthFirst and Wellness Initiative already has benefitted medical students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community. And this is exactly the intent of the initiative founder and director, Michelle Lizotte-Waniewski (Dr. Michelle), director of Student Success and Wellness and associate professor, Integrated Medical Science. Acknowledging that the initiative has accomplished a great deal in the first year, Dr. Michelle is looking to expand offerings this spring and beyond to meet the students' growing interests and needs. "We would like to embed more activities involving nutrition and exercise in courses and provide additional offerings to the FAU family such as yoga classes," she said.

Affiliate Faculty Honors and Awards

Congratulations to affiliate faculty member, Dr. Joel Policzer, who was awarded the  Josefina B. Magno Distinguished Hospice Physician Award by the  American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) at their annual meeting this month. Dr. Policzer is responsible for teaching our third year and fourth year medical students the hospice & palliative module. He is also the senior vice president of Medical Affairs at VITAS Healthcare and serves as the medical director of hospice inpatient unit at Florida Medical Center and Sunrise Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Congratulations to affiliate faculty member, Dr. Karen Kennedy, who was inducted as a  Fellow of the AAHPM at the meeting, which is one of the highest honors bestowed upon a physician by the FAAHPM. Physicians must demonstrate professional activity devoted to the practice of hospice and palliative medicine, be board certified, and serve as active members of the AAHPM for 5 consecutive years. Fellow status requires evaluation of the physician's practice by their peers, to determine their personal integrity, knowledge of the field, professional accomplishment, and scholarship.
