Honored to Intervene

We have recipients that will be eligible for assistance from some agencies but they end up waiting for months to get approval. One of our recent recipients, Thomas, age 64, has a T2 spinal cord injury. Thomas needs a ramp on the front of his home and doorways widened to accommodate his wheelchair. Thomas is a veteran, and as such, he will be eligible for some assistance with home modifications. The problem is, Thomas is leaving rehab this week and his Case Manager sent a referral to the VA to determine eligibility for them to help but it will take a long time to find out if he's eligible and then to wait for assistance. We see many, many people who really wouldn't be able to enter their homes due to long wait lists from agencies such as the VA.

Christopher, age 27, was referred to us after he was in a car accident and suffered a C5 spinal cord injury. He also needs a way to get into his home and get through his doorways when he transitions home from rehab. Christopher will be eligible for some services from the department of Health & Human Services but he won't be able to get any assistance for months and months.

We are so proud to step in and help get these wonderful people through their front doors and into their bathrooms and bedrooms.

A Few New Clients

We have a new recipient by the name of Jeremy. He is 39 years old and a full time student at UNT. Jeremy started showing signs of acute Guillain Barre Syndrome with paralysis in April. This is a disease in his spinal cord. He needs to have ankle and foot orthotics so he can progress back to walking. Since he is not insured and is a full time student, he cannot afford the orthotics he needs. NAF is proud to assist in purchasing the bilateral orthotics.

We are also helping Kenneth, age 50. Kenneth has a C2 spinal cord injury from a motor vehicle accident in February of this year. His therapist wants a standing frame for Kenneth as she feels it will benefit his ongoing progress towards standing activities and ambulation. NAF is pleased to provide Kenneth with an Easy Stand system for his home

Healthy Choices for Spinal Cord Injury and Disease

After reading a short article in Paralyzed News I learned just a little more information on how individuals living with a spinal cord injury or disease can improve their immune system and take care of their health. The article lists several great nutrients and the benefits these have, which prove to be especially attractive for someone with a disability looking to stay healthy!

    • Gingko Biloba: "Gingko operates through several potential physiological mechanisms relevant for neuronal health...For example, it's antioxidant, maintains cell membrane integrity, enhances oxygen use and metabolism, augments neurotransmissions and inhibits a form of programmed cell death call apoptosis.
    • Cranberries: These are great for preventing Urinary Tract Infections. These can be taken via pill or juice for best results. If you should go for the juice option, make sure to get a natural juice with no added sugars.
    • Vitamin D: Vitamin D is essential for the proper absorption of essential nutrients and for bone density. Paralyzed News suggests Vitamin D3 pills or sunlight for best results!
    • Creatine: Creatine helps to increase muscle function, enhancing ones strength and endurance. "Animal studies indicates that creatine exerts neuroprotective effect after injury".
  • It's especially important when living with any disability to maintain a healthy lifestyle. A healthy body is a happy spirit! For more information visit http://eatwelllivewellwithsci.com

Making Philanthropy A Part of Your Life

_________________________________

Entrepreneur.com recently put out an article on how to better incorporate philanthropy into your corporate atmosphere in 5 easy ways. By using your time, talent, money, goods, or through a partnership your company can make a big impact! Set aside some time for your team members to get together and volunteer for an organization which you believe in. Use your talent in management, finances, etc... an advise them on how to best use their resources.

What can you do to really make a difference in this world? Check out the article for a little more information, and start some research to see how you want to give back.

Resources in the State of Texas

Helping Restore Ability

Helping Restore Ability is a great non-profit organization local to Arlington, TX that serves clients state-wide. The goal of this organization is to allow for physically and mentally

disabled individuals to live independently and in the comfort of their own home.

Helping Restore Ability hosted their annual Hand-In-Hand luncheon last month, where our very own, Bev Olson, was awarded the Sam Provence Award! This award recognizes dedicated advocates for people with disabilities. Bev is recognized for her fearless efforts in not only advocating for individuals living with disabilities, but also her impact on the community for all that she has accomplished.

A Little Sweat Never Hurt Anyone

What kind of activities do you think you have been missing out on? Do you like the idea of playing Hockey? Fencing? Racing? None of these are out of your reach.

The Southwest Wheelchair Athletic Association participates in a series of athletic events all across the state of Texas. Find time to hop into a hockey sled and practice in Farmers Branch, TX. It's definitely a workout, but a little sweat never hurt anyone!

Check out their website for more information on how you can get involved and get in shape!

A Way to Swim.... In the Ocean!
 _________________________

We certainly never cease to be amazed the breakthroughs in technology these days. Recently we have heard about the research in looking for a cure for paralysis and a variety of devices that empower those who maneuver about on wheels.

Here is one more great invention which allows wheelchair bound individuals a chance to enjoy the ocean waves, up close and personal. Launched on the beaches of Dubai late June, the floating wheelchairs were a resounding success. The general-director of the Dubai municipality states that the move to incorporate safe and fun activities available for elderly and special needs

"comes as part of the civic body's keenness to achieve the strategic goal of the Dubai Government to be one of the most friendly cities in the world for people with special needs by 2020 through the initiative 'My Community ... A City for Everyone',"

We Need Your Help

Donate
Sponsor
Volunteer

Change lives; make a difference.

Your $25 donation will help provide clean catheters to a paralyzed child for one month when their insurance won't cover the expense.

Your $100 donation will help build a wheelchair ramp so we can get our clients out of rehab and through their front door at home.

Your $200 donation will help widen the doorways in their homes so their wheelchair can fit through the bathroom door. Insurance doesn't covers home modifications.

Your $500 donation will help provide life-changing medical equipment: wheelchairs and specialized shower chairs, etc. Most insurance only covers a small part of wheelchairs, if any, and no "bathing aids" are covered.
