"Schooner Cup Charity Regatta Aboard Californian"
Maritime Museum of San Diego, home to one of the world's largest collections of historic vessels from sail to steam to submarine, will sail California's tall ship Californian on San Diego Bay for the 30th Annual America's Schooner Cup Charity Regatta Saturday, April 7 to support Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS), a Navy sponsored 501c (3) public nonprofit organization that exists to help meet the emergent financial needs of active duty and
retired Sailors, Marines, and their families. Californian will race against schooners of all sizes and types and the public are welcome to join the sail crew. No sailing experience required.
The schooners participating in the event include beautiful boats that are ageless examples of living history
and many will be coming from distant ports to race.
Tickets are limited and available to sail and compete in the race on Californian with adult tickets at
$70 for adults and $48 for children.
Maritime Museum of San Diego's replica of explorer Cabrillo's galleon replica San Salvador will also
be boarding passengers for a fun afternoon of sailing plus views of the schooners racing in San Diego
Bay. Day sail tickets for San Salvador are $99 for adults, $94 for seniors, military, and students 13-17 and $59 for children.
Californian and San Salvador tickets include general admission to the Museum which can be an extended treat before or after these on-the-water adventures.

Dana Adobe Cultural Center
Trained volunteers lead small groups along the woodland trails that extend along the Rancho. Topics of discussion include wildflowers, plant and tree identification, natural history, and the cultural and land use history of the Dana Adobe Rancho Nipomo. Walks last 45 to 60 minutes and are approximately one mile in length.
Guided trail walks occur on the second Sunday of every month and are held at 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM.
Walks are free, however, donations are appreciated.

Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies is a collaboration between government agencies, non-profits, and the shipping industry to
reduce air pollution and ship strikes on endangered whales in the Santa Barbara Channel. The solution to both problems is to slow ships down on their way to and from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the busiest ports in North America. A Vessel Speed Reduction program uses a voluntary approach that provides financial
incentives and a positive public relations campaign to slow ships and work toward achieving safety for whales and cleaner skies.
Sean Hastings joined the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary in 1997 and serves as the site's Resource Protection Coordinator. Responsible for development of policies and programs to address
industrial, military, commercial and recreational uses and impacts in
and around the Sanctuary Sean helped to create a network of complete "no-take" zones to restore local fish and invertebrate
populations and habitats in the Sanctuary, and in CA state waters on the mainland. With a multi-agency coalition and community support, he helped to relocate commercial shipping lanes to protect endangered whales.
Sean has a Master of Marine Affairs Degree from the School of Marine Affairs, University of Washington, and a Bachelor of Arts in
Environmental Studies, University of California at Santa Cruz. Sean is an avid outdoorsman who surfs, boats, paddles, SCUBA and free dives, fishes, hunts, skis and snowboards throughout California and
Mexico's wild lands.

This fun filled day will not only feature some beautifully restored cars but also a stagecoach! The Native Sons of the Golden West-San Miguel Parlor 150 will be barbecuing up some wonderful tri-tip sandwiches along with hot dogs. The Cast Iron Dutch Oven Cooking crew will return with delicious desserts as well.
This year the Salinan Tribe of San Luis Obispo and Monterey Counties will be joining us with an information booth and artifacts. They will also be making adobe bricks that will be miniature in size, weighing about 8 pounds each so that kids can lift them. They will also be putting on a basket weaving demonstration.
We hope to have other demonstrations and displays, artisans and craftsmen, wine tasting and live music.

The Olivas Adobe is happy to bring you, once again, the Owl Festival. The Olivas owl, we call Olivia, has made her return to the Adobe and has nested. Due to the fires, she arrived a bit later than usual, but she has one hatch-ling already. We are unsure if there are more eggs she may be sitting on. So there might be more hatch-lings at the time of the festival.
The festival is a FREE family event held within the courtyard. Adobe docents will assist you and/or your little ones in making a pine cone owl. They are also happy to provide you information about the Olivas family and home. Their book sale will be happening as well. You will be entertained with live organ music while you make your rounds to various vendors and informational
displays.
Participating in the festival are The Chumash Indian Museum, The Ventura County Gourd Artists, Hal Epstein nature photographer, Love Bird hand made jewelry, and Blue Ridge Honey will be providing samples. Speaking of food, West BBQ food truck will be there to satisfy your hunger cravings.
Don't miss the program by The Ojai Raptor Society. They will have live owls and other raptors. The program time is

Learn how rum running, the organized smuggling of imported whiskey, rum and other liquor by sea and over land to the United States, started within weeks after Prohibition took effect on January 17, 1920. People still wanting to wet their whistles in illegal speakeasies and at home were rejecting foul-tasting and dangerous locally made industrial alcohol which were being passed off as the real thing. They were demanding quality, authentic Scotch and other liquor "right off the boat." Among the customers for imported booze from Europe, Canada and the Caribbean were the nation's bootleggers who ran and supplied thousands of speakeasies. So just who were the top kings of the bootleggers? Come find out!

Since 2013, archaeologists at California State University, Northridge, have been studying the material remains of "water wars." This fieldwork, concentrated on sites associated with the 1928 St. Francis Dam disaster and at construction camps that were used during the building of the Los Angeles Aqueduct, provides new information about the daily lives of the people most directly impacted by conflict over water, and gives us a better look at how such competition shaped the history of California.
The Speaker Series brings you some of the top researchers, educators, historians, and scientists for 6 great nights of learning and entertainment. The Speaker Series runs on the 4th Thursday of each month from April through September.

Maritime Museum of San Diego, home to one of the world's finest collections of historic vessels, from sail to steam to submarine, announces the
opening of Wind & Water: Sailing in San Diego. The Museum is proud to introduce this rare new photographic collection of historic, classic, and wooden yachts racing and sailing in San Diego. The exhibit includes an impressive body of work to amaze and inspire visitors about sailing and San Diego Bay -- from America's Cup to historic Museum vessels, to traditional
wooden boats sailed for recreation on the waterfront.
The exhibit opens Sunday, March 4 in the Star of India Hold Gallery and is included with general admission. Star of India is the world's oldest active sailing ship and one of 10 historic vessels guests explore with admission to the Maritime Museum of San Diego.
In the new exhibit Wind & Water: Sailing in San Diego, images from international yachting and nautical sport photographer, Bobby Grieser, are paired with photographs from his close sailing and photography master and friend, Mark Albertazzi. Dr. Raymond Ashley, Ph.D., K.C.I., President/CEO of the Maritime Museum of San Diego, describes Wind & Water: Sailing in San Diego as "a passionate example for both sailing and photography fostered by a deep friendship with two of the industry's most renowned nautical photographers."
The collection features scenes of classic yachts and historic sailboats captured on the waters of San Diego.

iscover the man behind the legend as the most comprehensive exhibition of Genghis Khan and his treasures invades the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, its only Southern California stop on an international tour that has drawn more than a million visitors.
Opening on February 16, 2018, the start of the Mongolian New Year, this special exhibition presents a more complete image of the legendary leader whom Time Magazine and CNN named "The Man of the Millennium." As the exhibit strikingly portrays, Genghis's reputation as the greatest conqueror is well-deserved. He dominated three times more land in his lifetime than either Julius Caesar or Alexander the Great, a conquest attested to by the formidable array of swords, bows, arrows, saddles, and armor included on display in Genghis Khan. In fact, the historic exhibition showcases hundreds of artifacts from Genghis's 13th century Empire, the largest such collection ever to tour.
However, as visitors discover, Genghis not only created the nation of Mongolia and its written language, but his lineage established the modern borders of nations from India to Iran, Korea to China; and opened the trade routes that united East and West forever after.
Curated and developed by dinosaur expert Don Lessem, the exhibition features more than 200 spectacular objects on display, including rare and sophisticated weapons, costumes, jewels, ornaments, instruments, and numerous other fascinating relics and elaborate artifacts from 13th-century Mongolia. The exhibition features loans by private collectors from Mongolia, Azerbaijian, and the United States.

"Setting the Scene: Hollywood Animators and Background Painters in the Santa Paula Civic Collection"
The Santa Paula Art Museum has gone Hollywood with its current exhibition, Setting the Scene: Hollywood Animators and Background Painters in the Santa Paula Civic Collection. The exhibit features fine art paintings from the famous Santa Paula Civic Collection by artists who worked behind-the-scenes at Disney, MGM, Warner Bros., and 20th Century Fox during the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Since the 1930s, film and animation studios have played a leading role in the lives of many California artists and have been influential in the development of what is recognized as the "California Style." Nowhere is this more evident than within the Santa Paula Civic Collection, a historic collection of artworks established in 1937 and owned by the City of Santa Paula. Setting the Scene displays some of the best works from Santa Paula's collection. While the art on exhibit was not created for the movies, it includes personal works by Disney background painters like Al Dempster, Basil Davidovich, and Charles Payzant, who lent their talents to animated features such as Fantasia, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, and Sleeping Beauty. The exhibit also stars artists like George Gibson, once head of MGM's scenic design department and lead scenic artist for The Wizard of Oz; and Emil Kosa, Jr., who designed the original 20th Century Fox logo and won an Academy Award in 1964 for his work on Cleopatra.
The colorful exhibition explores the relationship between the artists' fine art paintings and their commercial work for film. Viewers can learn more about the history of painting in motion pictures, the process of creating an animated feature, special effects, and the people behind some of the most iconic movie scenes ever filmed.
Visitors to the exhibit are also invited to write or illustrate a scene from their own story to add to a community-made storyboard. Setting the Scene is on view through June 17, 2018.

Camp Roberts Museum
"New Military Exhibits"
Camp Roberts opened as the U.S. Army's largest basic training installation in mid-1941, just prior to us entering World War II. For the last 30 years, the volunteers at the Camp Roberts Historical Museum have been preserving and relating the camp's long and important role in our nation's defense, through WWII and the Korean War, and up to its current role as the main training site for the California Army National Guard. The camp also hosts training units from all the other US military components, regular and reserve, as well as those from allied nations.
There are always new museum exhibits for guests to enjoy. Since the big expansion of the large Afghanistan Exhibit, museum volunteers have completed an Army field mess exhibit, a Vietnam era field hospital exhibit, and are building a new exhibit on helicopter training close to their Cobra attack helicopter. They are also hard at work on expanding and upgrading the large picnic and event center at the Main Museum. It is the largest Army museum complex in California and the state's official military museum. Enjoy the Museum's featured history video, research library, gift shop, and the Wall of Fame (icluding Robert Mitchum, Steve Allen, Bob Newhart, Red Skelton, and William Holden).

Pleasant Valley Historical Society Museum
"Hello! -- Antique Phones Exhibit & Silent Auction"
Bill Doctorman, who recently died at the age of 89, had an extensive collection of historic phones. He willed his collection to the Pleasant Valley Historical Society (PVHS). Receipts found for phones that were purchased in his home state of Illinois indicate that he had been accumulating them for most of his lifetime.
The PVHS museum currently has about 100 phones on display from the late 1880s through the 1980s. Included are the wooden (usually oak) farm phones of various styles through the candlestick and art deco phones. It is fascinating to see how creative American manufacturers could be. The exhibit also includes European phones that illustrate the standardization of style throughout the world.
The Museum received over 200 phones from the Doctorman legacy and will be having a silent auction offering the excess to the community. Stop by to see this unusual exhibit which includes a display for young children to experience "dialing" a telephone.

During it's maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City on April 15, 1912, the largest, most luxurious ocean liner, the RMS Titanic, sank in the North Atlantic Ocean at 2:20am after it collided with an iceberg. There were an estimated 2,224 passengers and crew aboard the ship. With a shortage of lifeboats, more than 1,500 died -- most in their life jackets in the icy cold
28 °F water.

"Taminaru: A Day in the Life of a Japanese American Fishing Village"
One hundred years ago, Terminal Island, in the Port of Los Angeles, was the home of a thriving community of 3,000 Japanese American fishermen and cannery workers. Using the skills honed in their ancestral home of Wakayama-ken prefecture, the Japanese Americans' labor contributed to the phenomenal success of the West Coast fishing industry. After Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the Terminal Islanders were evicted and sent to internment camps. Today very little traces remain of a once-thriving community.
The exhibit Taminaru, curated by Naomi Hirahara and Tara Fansler, documents a typical day in the life of the Terminal Islanders.

Olivas Adobe
The Olivas Adobe Historical Interpreters welcome you to come for a docent led, history-packed tour. Tours are given Saturdays and Sundays starting at 11am, with the last tour departing at 3pm. Come and travel back in time to the Rancho Period at the home of Don Raymundo Olivas, his wife Teadora, and their twenty one children.

"The Vietnam War"
The Vietnam War was the second-longest war in United States history, after the war in Afghanistan.
Commitments to the people and government of South Vietnam to keep communist forces from overtaking them reached back into the Truman Administration. Eisenhower placed military advisers and CIA operatives in Vietnam, and John F. Kennedy sent American soldiers to Vietnam. Lyndon Johnson ordered the first real combat by American troops, and Richard Nixon concluded the war.
Despite the decades of resolve, billions and billions of dollars, nearly 60,000 American lives and many more injuries, the United States failed to achieve its objectives. Learn about Montebello's Reggie J. Rodriguez who made the ultimate sacrifice and is honored by having a city park named after him.

Pleasant Valley Historical Society & Museum
Free: "Allis-Chalmers WD Row Crop Tractor"
The Pleasant Valley Historical Society & Museum has received a working tractor to be part of their permanent display. Lou Oliver of Camarillo, a member of the Topa Flywheelers Tractor Club, has given his fully restored 1952 Allis-Chalmers WD row crop tractor to the Museum.
"Allis," as she is called, was purchased new in 1952 from Power Tractor by the Tanaka Bros. Farms. She worked well and hard for over forty years. She was restored by Leonard Oliver and brought back to Camarillo in 2006 by Lou. On a bright, sunny morning in late November, members from PVHS met at a ranch in the Las Posas Valley where Allis was stored. She started right up and drove onto the flatbed that took her to the Museum where she now resides. Plans are underway to build a protective home in keeping with her history.

FREE Opening Reception
The exhibit features artwork in response to the Thomas Fire, the largest wildfire in California history. With over 70 artists working in a variety of mediums, there will be artwork about the fire, its aftermath and recovery.
