NAMLE recently asked Jeff Brown, Founder and CEO of Fourth Estate Public Benefit Corporationto tell us more about the Fourth Estate and its mission and vision.  Officially launched in 2016, Brown's vision was a response to what he explains to be a "very clear" need for new models of monetization and ownership than the "woefully inadequate" purely for-profit and/or purely non-profit models. New Workshop Geared Towards Supporting Student Expression

The  Journalism Education Association continues to advocate for protection of student journalists' right to freedom of speech and press. JEA will sponsor a workshop geared toward developing and supporting the passage of student free expression bills at its  Advisers Institute in Las Vegas. Workshop topics include finding a sponsor, working on the bill, advocating, hosting a lobby day, contacting legislators after the lobby day, and continuing to support the sponsors in what they request.

22 Million New Voters  by 2020
Elections
 

The Lamp continues to build momentum for its  22x20 voter registration initiative which aims to register the estimated 22 million new voters who will turn 18 in time for the 2020 elections. Watch the video below for more information on this ongoing initiative.

Apply before April 3rd for the Digital EngAGEment Conference

The application deadline for the  Brooklyn College DIGITAL engAGEment Conference has been extended to April 3, 2018. This one day conference, held in lower Manhattan on May 18, 2018, will bring together media literacy scholars, theorists, practitioners, community leaders and activists to interrogate, investigate, enact and celebrate the importance of media literacy to activists, and the myriad of ways in which these concepts and activities interact.

Attend the International Digital Citizenship Summit 
in Dublin Ireland, April 28th

Dig Cit Institute's next  DigCitSummitIRL will take place on April 28, 2018 in Dublin at Trinity College. This event will serve as a gathering space for national and international Digital Citizenship influencers and foster cross-sector collaboration among educators, tech leaders, innovators, students, parents, administrators, government officials, education officials from local, state, and federal levels, media specialists, non-profit organizations, businesses, thought leade rs, librarians, youth advocates and more.

Get an  Advan c ed  Certi fication in
Media Literacy

The  Pauline Center for Media Studies  is offering an 
Advanced Certification Course in Media Literacy  for 
teachers, catechists, parents, and anyone wishing to 
create that dialogue between faith formation and our 
media culture.  The course meets July 15 - 2 1, 2018 at the  Pauline Center for Media Studies, 3908 Sepulveda Blvd, Culver City, CA 90230. Topics covered include:  Media Literacy - What is It?, Theology of Popular Culture, Faith Formation  in a Digital Age, Virtues and Social Media, Philosophy of the Media, Character Formation in a Media Culture, Pop Music and Media Mindfulness, The Church and Media: An Historical Panorama, How to Read a Film, Television and Media Mindfulness, and more!  Fee is $250. Registration is open for the Media Education Lab's  Summer Institute in Media Literacy that is taking place July 15 - 20, 2018. This professional development opportunity is open to K-12 educators, librarians, college and university professors, media activists and community organizers. Graduate credit is available.

Youtube Series from KQED 

KQED Education is a  teaching and learning media hub for students and educators alike, where amplifying youth voice and making media support civic engagement and real-world media literacy. Their  YouTube series  Above the Noise  seeks to cut through false accounts and over dramatization to bring the research and facts behind important topics.   KQED Learn , launched last month and is a free, flexible platform for inquiry-based learning.It is a hub for student voices, a launching pad for exploration, and a showcase for student-made media that inspires students to research, reflect, and 
respond to timely issues.

New Article from JBFC Highlights Films that Foster Empathy and Strong Female Characters

The  Jacob Burns Film Center' s recent blog post: " Celebrate Women's History Month: Six Essential Films to Watch with Your Kids " draws on the JBFC's  Cinemania: Afterschool Film Club  curriculum to encourage home viewing by providing a curated list of films that foster empathy and highlight strong female characters, as well as questions for parents and children to consider after the film.

Cyberwise's media literacy program was featured on The Today Show  http://www.cybercivics.com/today-show on March 22.

New Day Films 's Alice Bouvrie gave a workshop and screening her film  A Chance To Dress,  on Tuesday March 27th, at the  American Society on Aging Conference  in San Francisco.

On Thursday, March 29th at 10:00am New Day Films's Robin Lung held a screening of her film  FINDING KUKAN at the  Association of Asian American Studies Conference  in San Francisco at the Westin St. Francis.
