Vital Congregations Mark #3: Outward Incarnational Focus

The Vital Congregations program directs us to assess our ministry by seven marks. Week #3 is about an "outward incarnational focus."

Many churches have a primary focus on "inward" things like worship attendance, the size of the youth group, and activities for young adults. "Outward" facing churches are more concerned about their impact on the world outside the walls of the church. These churches ask, "Can we respond to this need in our community in a creative and helpful way?"

For many churches, the major impact in the community is in the form of financial contributions. "Incarnational" means "in the flesh." In other words, is the congregation engaged in more ways that contributing financially? Are people from the church actively involved in the work of helping their neighbors?

Vital churches have an outward incarnational focus.

Vital Congregations: The Big Picture

I was asked about the Vital Congregations program, specifically in what ways the current Bible study connects with the overall program. I understand the uncertainty because I experienced it, too, at the training event in Denver last May. Let me try giving an overview of the whole program.

Vital Congregations is a two-year process. During the first year the church assesses its current ministries in seven different areas. This assessment uses a process called "appreciative inquiry." When you look at an organization it is often in terms of needs; "What do we need to improve?" This process is different in focusing upon what the church does well and building on current strengths.

The current Bible study is a way of assessing how Parkway engages in the seven marks of vital congregations. In the Bible study, the questions for discussion work at two levels; personal and corporate. For example, in the lesson on Intentional Authentic Evangelism these questions were suggested for discussion: "Recall the first time Christ became Good News in your life? (A personal question.) Another question was about the church, "How does your church community equip and empower you to practice authentic evangelism?" (A corporate question.) In the fall, everyone will participate in a congregational survey based upon the Seven Marks Bible Study. This survey, along with the Bible study, will help us assess our current ministry in terms of the seven-marks of Vital Congregations.

In the fall, members will be asked to recall significant times, people, and efforts of the church in the past. This will help create a historical timeline of Parkway's ministry. Perhaps there was a program, emphasis, or effort in the past that we need to bring back into practice.

At the same time, we will also do a neighborhood assessment. Using a variety of tools, we will determine some of the needs of the immediate neighborhood around the church and see how those needs align with the seven marks of Vital Congregations.

The next phase, in year two, is to create or adjust our ministry to use our assets to meet the neighborhood needs. Perhaps we will find that there are activities of the church that no longer serve others and can be stopped. We expect to find that we need to create or align an existing ministry better to touch the lives of our neighbors.

Ash Wednesday Service
The season of Lent calls all Christians to a period of spiritual reflection and renewal in anticipation of Easter. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday falling on February 26 this year. Parkway will hold an evening service on Ash Wednesday at 6:00. Our brothers and sisters from El Divino Salvador Presbyterian Church will be co-celebrating this holy day with us.

One of the traditions of Ash Wednesday is the imposition of ashes on a worshipper's forehead in the shape of a cross. The ashes are made from the palm fronds from Palm Sunday and remind us of the difficulties of following Jesus' example of servant leadership and extravagant compassion.

Please plan to join your Parkway family on the evening of February 26 as we begin Lent together.

Guatemala Banquet Success!!

Thank you to everyone who had a hand in helping with the Guatemala Banquet held last Friday night. The purpose of the banquet is to raise revenue to help offset the costs for a Mission Team from the church to travel to Guatemala working with Tree 4 Hope at the Hogar Miguel Magone and Hogar Maria, Hope Academy, and the Elder Center in Santiago Atitlan.

Approximately 65 people attended the event and participated in the silent auction. The auction alone raised nearly $5,000.

A group from Parkway, led by Allen Mosiman, will travel to Guatemala July 11-19 this year.
Book Drive Success
We went to visit Ronald McDonald House Sunday afternoon during children's fellowship time.  We learned that Ronald McDonald House is for families to stay in so that they can be close to their child who is in the hospital. It is free so they don't have to pay for a hotel.  We delivered books so that we could help them have more books in their library. We played on their playground with two little boys who had to stay there because their brother was very sick. Ronald McDonald House is collecting the pull tabs off of soda cans to recycle and help the community. They use the money to help the families stay at the house. Thank you for bringing books to help us share with the Ronald McDonald House.

Harbors and Horizons

Often I have spoken about Edward Thompson. Edward and I met in the Doctor of Ministry program at McCormick Seminary some 25 years ago. It isn't an exaggeration to say when we first shook hands we became best friends.  Edward was serving a church in Troon, Scotland at the time we met.  He later moved to the US and served churches in Kansas City and Naples, FL before taking a position with the Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church.  He and his wife, Liz, recently moved to Louisville for a new position.  He writes about his journey from "harbors to horizons," in this link:
