   Mercy at the March

The above slideshow is only a small sampling of the Mercy world in action in Washington, DC and at sibling marches across the country. Be sure to take a look at our Facebook and Twitter pages (and those of our schools) to see more of what happened. Below are links to a few stories featuring Mercy people.

After the March, the Movement Continues

March for Our Lives was one of the biggest youth protests since the Vietnam War. The protesters plan to continue growing their movement, persuading people to register to vote and attend town halls. For the latter, the student activists have set up a website, thetownhallproject.com, to organize the effort.

Organizers also encourage supporters to sign a petition that calls for Congress to close loopholes in our background check law that allows dangerous people who shouldn’t be allowed to purchase firearms to slip through the cracks and buy guns online or at gun shows. The petition also calls for prohibiting the sale of high-capacity magazines such as the ones used by the shooter at the Parkland, Florida, school. Importantly, the petition's main request is to pass a law to ban the sale of assault weapons.

Organizers are also planning another school walkout on April 20. Students are also invited to share their story.

Jesus Christ is Risen Today! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

The disciples hid in fear during the days of Jesus’ Passion. They saw what they could not believe and they grew in fear. They spoke among themselves about what this could mean because they had hoped!

And then they were summoned! Mary Magdalene had seen Jesus, seen the Christ. Their fear changed to joy despite the fact that they continued to be tested. They needed, as we need, multiple encounters with the Risen Christ. They needed to be “filled with the Spirit.” They needed to profess their Faith.

There are signs all around us that Jesus the Christ is Risen and still among us. Young people from all over the States have risen and proclaimed, Enough is Enough! Our Mercy students took up the cause and walked out of their schools in support of the students in Parkland, FL. They have moved from fear to expressions of justice, expressions of hope! Our Mercy students have journeyed to Washington, DC, and many other major cities to join their peers in The March for Our Lives and speak their truth! They have seen the Christ!

Jesus Christ is Risen Today!!! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

Please note: The MESA Office will be closed Good Friday

    School Profile:
Mercyhurst Preparatory School

We continue with our series of brief school profiles with Mercyhurst Preparatory School in Erie, PA. As always, our goal for these profiles is to support learning from one another. If you see something you want to know more about, get in touch with that school community! All MESA education ministries are listed here: http://mercyedu.org/educational-ministries.

Mercyhurst Preparatory School is a four year co-ed Catholic secondary school founded by the Sisters of Mercy to prepare students from all religious and ethnic backgrounds for a successful, productive, and compassionate life in an ever-changing and interdependent world. The school was founded in the 1920s when Mother M. Borgia Egan purchased 75 acres of farmland in remote southeast Erie to grow the presence of Catholic education in the region. Today, the school boasts more than 8,000 alumni who've been grounded in an education based upon the teachings of Jesus Christ, the charism of Mercy, and a modeling of Judeo-Christian values. The school strives for excellence in academic and co-curricular programs, and promotes service to the local and global communities. It is accredited by the Middle States Association.

Learn more about the school by visiting its website and following it on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Watch this great video presentation of the Mercyhurst mission statement created by members of the Student Accreditation Advisory Board. View the school's publications page to keep up to date.

As a college preparatory school, the Mercyhurst Prep curriculum is rigorous, and 98% of the students attend a post-secondary institution. The school offers a wide range of courses at the college prep, honors, and International Baccalaureate (IB) levels. Visit this page to view the school's extensive course selection catalog. The IB program is based on the concept that general education at the upper secondary level should promote the development of the lifelong skills of critical thinking, communication, and integration of the information through an in depth study of the major areas of knowledge. Successful completion of the program earns for the student a diploma recognized for university admission and for course credit at many colleges and universities throughout the world. The IB’s greatest value, however, lies in its worth as a challenge and a symbol of the greater achievement to which the student has aspired. Mercyhurst Prep is northwestern Pennsylvania’s only secondary International Baccalaureate (IB) school. The school's arts and athletic programs are also world-class and beloved in the region.

Mercyhurst has a proud tradition of service and giving. Compassionate presence, justice, service, and concern for the dignity of all persons (the charism of our foundress, Catherine McAuley) are the foundation of the school. Service hours are a requirement for all students.

Last year, more than $800,000 was raised for student scholarships and financial aid by its broad giving community, including families, alumni and local organizations. The school is also embarking on a capital campaign to improve its performing arts space and strengthen school security. Read more about the work of the school's advancement team in the most recent version of its annual report.

A group of 27 students from Mercyhurst participated in March for Our Lives after raising more than $1,175 for the trip through a GoFundMe campaign and by designing "Enough" sweatshirts that they sold to students, their families and alumni. Their representation at the March followed the schoolwide participation in National Walkout Day, which was organized by student members of the Critical Concerns Club.

Sisters of Mercy Lenten Reflection Series - The Seven Last Words of Jesus, Week 6

“It is finished”—these words from Jesus, uttered from the darkness of his suffering, resonate in our hearts. They offer us peace and serenity that come from the womb of eternity.

“It is finished”—something radically new surges in humanity that gives meaning and expression to the call of the Spirit. It moves us to go far beyond ourselves to live out the qualities Jesus embraced in his life and energy: love, justice, mercy, wisdom and truth.
