MAC Appeals to Governor Edwards for Floodgate Funding
|
Members of the Morganza Action Coalition and local legislators met with Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards last week in an effort to secure state funding for the final floodgate in the locally constructed levee system along the Morganza to the Gulf Hurricane Protection System alignment.
The Grand Bayou Floodgate will link the Terrebonne and Lafourche levee segments on the eastern end of the Morganza alignment.
Attending the meeting were (pictured left to right) North Lafourche Levee District President Cory Kief, Morganza Project Manager Mitch Marmande, Sen. Norby Chabert, Terrebonne Levee District Executive Director Reggie Dupre, Governor Edwards, South Lafourche Levee District General Manager Windell Curole, MAC Managing Consultant Lori LeBlanc, North Lafourche Levee District Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois, Rep. Truck Gisclair,
and MAC President Jay Walker.
"The Governor has and continues to be a strong supporter of Morganza to the Gulf and he recognizes why protecting our coastal communities is so important," Walker says. "We thank him and our local legislators for all their efforts to help us build Morganza and protect Terrebonne and Lafourche."

MAC Meets with Congressional Delegation on Morganza, Flood Insurance and Water Bill
|
In early March, MAC representatives met with members of
Louisiana's Congressional delegation, key committee staffers and leaders of the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on a variety of issues that impact hurricane protection and sustainability for Terrebonne and Lafourche residents, including Morganza to the Gulf, reform of the national flood insurance program, and the next Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) expected to be introduced this year.
"Our Senators and Congressmen are champions for MAC and for all of us who live in Terrebonne and Lafourche when it comes to promoting Morganza to the Gulf and other key policy initiatives like flood insurance reform and regulatory reform that impact our ability to protect ourselves. During our meetings this month, we were able to update all of our representatives on local construction along the Morganza alignment and push for inclusion of the federal Morganza project and other local flood protection projects in the next WRDA bill," explains MAC President Jay Walker.
Meetings were held with Louisiana Senators Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy and Congressmen Garret Graves, Steve Scalise, Ralph Abraham, and Mike Johnson, as well as staff from key Congressional offices and committees such as the Senate Commerce, Banking, and Environment and Public Works Committees and House Natural Resources Committee. MAC also met with high-ranking staff of the
U.S. Department of interior.

Morganza Project Update: Falgout Canal Floodgate
|
Construction is underway on the
Falgout Canal Floodgate, which, when completed, will help provide
35 miles of continuous levee and floodgate protection along the Morganza to the Gulf alignment from Dularge to Pointe-aux-Chenes.
Work on the $40 million floodgate is currently 30 percent complete and the structure is expected to be operational in May 2019. Construction is funded by local sales tax revenue, Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government, and state capital outlay funds.
"Sealevel Construction and GIS Engineering are making great progress on the Falgout Canal Floodgate and Terrebonne Parish Government was happy to be able to contribute $16.8 million for this important project," says
Parish President Gordon Dove.

the
Bayou Industrial Group Luncheon on Monday, May 14
.
The levee district directors and MAC members will give updates on flood protection projects in our communities as the 2018 hurricane season begins.
The meeting begins at noon May 14 at the Bayou Country Club in Thibodaux. MAC members and the general public are invited to attend with reservations. Cost is $25 and reservations can be made here.

Today, MAC advocates for comprehensive levee protection for Terrebonne & Lafourche Parishes.
MAC relies on financial contributions from local businesses and individuals to support these advocacy efforts in Washington, D.C. and in Baton Rouge, as well as to fund outreach and communication activities to gain public support for the Morganza to the Gulf Hurricane Protection System and levee projects in North and South Lafourche.
