Join the Kansas State Book Network committee 

Every year, the Kansas State Book Network, or KSBN, introduces incoming freshmen at K-State, including on the Polytechnic Campus, to a new book that is read and utilized throughout the fall and spring semesters.

It is a KSBN committee that works together to find the appropriate reading material, sifting through nominated or recommended novels each year that they feel could be important to the incoming students. The members read samples and even whole books to narrow down the selection list, first from 12, then to six and then to three finalists. After the winner is chosen, it goes on to the upcoming freshmen students.

If you are interested in joining other faculty and staff members from the Polytechnic Campus on the KSBN committee to help choose impactful books for incoming Wildcats, contact Katherine Jones at [email protected].

This year's theme is "wellness and well-being" and the committee is exploring books that introduce readers to common issues that students experience in college, such as stress, illness, accountability and grit. They also are looking at materials that offer ways to cope and help others.

The first committee meeting is April 6, so please send your name to Katherine as soon as you can.

Hallo von Deutschland! Students enrolled in International Project Management and Intercultural Communication this semester got the opportunity to travel abroad to Germany and Switzerland March 5-11. One of the stops on their trip was at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, which is featured in the above group photo.
Students in the campus's chapter of Women In Aviation spent part of their Spring Break at the organization's annual conference in Reno, Nevada, where they got to network with aviation industry members, listen to inspiring speakers and attend professional development seminars.
Fossett Plaza opens near campus, honors K-State Polytechnic's involvement in historic flight

A new memorial has opened up adjacent to Kansas State Polytechnic that honors Steve Fossett's famous flight around the world and the campus has been included in that recognition for its involvement in the historic moment.

Fossett Plaza was unveiled March 22 to a large crowd of people gathered just outside of AvFlight, located at the west end of Beechcraft Road. The memorial, grounded by an 8-foot stainless steel sculpture, was created to pay homage to Salina's part in Fossett's record-setting 22,936-mile solo, nonstop flight around the globe. 

The flight took place in 2005 and Fossett used the runway at Salina Regional Airport to take off and land. He also asked for the help of students and instructors from K-State Polytechnic to assist with mission control and aviation maintenance.

K-State Polytechnic's vital role in the flight was revisited when Dennis Kuhlman, dean of the campus at that time, spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. He said one of the most important reasons Fossett attempted the aviation achievement was to "encourage youth to dream." The K-State Polytechnic students, now alumni, and professors involved in the mission are recognized on one of the steel markers in the plaza.

A high-five is one of the most recognizable ways two people can share excitement or celebrate a job well done. Kansas State Polytechnic's CEO and Dean Verna Fitzsimmons awards her high-five each week to honor faculty, staff and students for their dedication to the university.

High-five to Pi Day organizers and congratulations to pi recitation winners!

On March 14, the campus celebrated a quirky holiday - Pi Day. Built around the mathematical constant of 3.14, the event encouraged students to recite as many digits of pi as possible, participate in pi trivia, and of course, enjoy real pie.

It was a fun way to bring the Polytechnic Campus together and I appreciate our math instructors - Teresa Hartman, Megan Lorson and Jessica Spare - for organizing the celebration. I would also like to recognize student support services and Katherine Jones for assisting in its success and all of the faculty and staff members who donated pie to eat.

There were four students who could recite at least 30 digits of the number pi. Congratulations to senior Jacob Rose who remembered 73 digits; junior Nic Ramirez who recited 51 digits; freshman John Coates who gave 40 digits; and freshman Satoru Okada who remembered 30 digits. Way to go - you should be proud of this academic achievement!
Scholarships

1.  STUDY ABROAD - If you are interested in studying abroad in the Summer 2018 semester, the $5,000 Gilman scholarship is now open. Must be a U.S. Citizen who is pell grant eligible and who will do a study abroad program that is longer than 3 weeks. Contact the Office of Study Abroad on the Manhattan campus or visit   

2.  HISPANIC students - The Hispanic Scholarship Fund offers scholarships to students of Hispanic heritage. Must have a minimum 2.5 GPA. Must be enrolled full time. Permanent legal residents and DACA students are eligible to apply along with U.S. citizens. DEADLINE: March 30, 2018

3. ALPHA ETA RHO members - A number of scholarships worth $1000-2000 is available to Alpha Eta Rho members. Must have a minimum gpa of 3.0 or higher. DEADLINE: March 30, 2018.  https://www.alphaetarho.org/ahp-national-scholarship/

4. PILOT students - The $1,500 Richard L. Taylor Flight Training Scholarship is open to any professional pilot student who has their private pilot's license. Must have a 3.0 or higher gpa. DEADLINE:  March 30, 2018 . 
5.  MECHANICAL or ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING students - The Raymond G. Alvine Memorial Scholarship is offering a scholarship worth up to $5,000. Student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. DEADLINE: March 31, 2018. 

6. WOMEN GRADUATE students - The Dr. Michaeline Chance-Reay Community scholarship is available to a part-time, non-traditional female graduate student. Deadline to apply is April 1, 2018. 

7. AVIATION MAINTENANCE or AVIONICS students - Aircraft Electronics Association is offering a number of different scholarship for aviation maintenance and avionics students. DEADLINE: April 1, 2018. 

8. NONTRADITIONAL students - K-State is offering a $500 Edna S. Young scholarship to a full-time, non-traditional student. Must be one of the following: 25 years of age or older, married, a parent, a veteran, or returning to school after an absence of 3 or more years. DEADLINE: April 1, 2018. 

9. PILOT students - The Jason Dahl Scholarship is available for the 2018-2019 year. Must be majoring in the professional pilot program. DEADLINE: April 1, 2018.  http://dahlfund.org/scholarship-information/

10. AVIATION MANAGEMENT and PILOT students - Aviation Distributors and Manufacturers is offering scholarships to aviation management and professional pilots who will be in their third year. DEADLINE:  April 2, 2018 . 

12. AVIATION students -  The Textron Aviation  Leadership Scholarship is available to juniors and/or seniors that are  full-time students majoring in one of the aviation  programs. The award amounts will vary, based on the earnings for the endowed scholarship. Deadline: April 13, 2018 by 5:00 p.m.
      Students must:
          - have completed 60 hours of coursework in one of the aviation major options
          - provide a current resume highlighting outstanding achievements exhibited
          - demonstrate an interest in receiving the scholarship by submitting a typewritten 1-2 page essay on how this                   scholarship will enhance your ability
          - include a copy of your college transcript with application materials
          - forward documentation of established criteria above, along with the
            essay, to Cindy Newell, Financial Aid Coordinator, Room 209, College Center  

13.  FLIGHT TEAM members - The Dr. Harold S. Wood Award for Excellence is offering a $2000 scholarship to a college student who is a flight team member. Deadline: April 14, 2018. 

14. AIRPORT MANAGEMENT students - Airports Council International is offering $2,500 scholarships to airport management students. Must have a 3.0 or higher GPA. DEADLINE: April 15, 2018.  http://aci-na.org/sites/default/files/aci-na_commissioners_scholarship_2017.pdf

15. AVIATION students - The Wichita Community Foundation has two aviation-related scholarships open. The Wichita Aero Club Humphrey and the Wichita Aero Club Stimpson scholarships offer a $5000 award to a student studying in the aviation field. DEADLINE: April 15, 2018. (We have had a number of K-State Polytechnic students receive this scholarship in the past.) 

14. AVIATION students - The Joseph Frasca Excellence in Aviation Scholarship is offered to aviation students with a 3.0 or higher gpa. DEADLINE: April 21, 2018.  http://www.uaa.aero/joseph_frasca_excellence_in_av.php

Loan Repayment Option for Graduating Students
The state of Kansas is offering up to $15,000 in student loan repayment and up to a 5-year state tax waiver for graduates who establish residency in one of the 77 Kansas counties designated as a rural opportunity zone. For more information, visit:  http://www.kansascommerce.com/index.aspx?nid=320 

Employee Tuition Assistance and Spouse/Dependent Grant
1.  Employee Tuition Assistance

Award amount is for tuition only in a K-State course for up to 3 credit hours per term. 

The maximum award amount will not exceed the value of 3 hours at the in-state Manhattan/Salina tuition rate (ie. campus fees, other institutional fees, etc. are the responsibility of the employee). 

2.  Spouse/Dependent Grants (Only REGULAR employees are eligible.  If you are unsure if you are REGULAR or TERM, check your contract or with the HR office.)

For Dependents or Spouses that are enrolled full time in a degree terminating undergraduate program, the award will be the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 7 undergraduate course credits, where full-time for an undergraduate is defined as at least 12 enrolled credit hours per regular fall/spring term.

For Spouses that are enrolled part-time in a degree terminating undergraduate program the maximum award will be the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 3 undergraduate course credits, where part-time for an undergraduate is defined as less than 12 enrolled credit hours per regular fall/spring term. (Enrollment of less than 3 credit hours, will result in the proration of the award i.e. 2 credit hours enrolled = the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 2 credit hours - or - 1 credit hour enrolled = the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 1 credit hour. )

Dependents that are enrolled less than full-time in an undergraduate program are not eligible for the K-State Dependent/Spouse Grant.

For Dependents or Spouses that are enrolled in a degree terminating graduate or veterinary medicine program the maximum award will be the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 3 course credit hours as indicated by the student's degree program, graduate or veterinary medicine. (Enrollment of less than 3 credit hours, will result in the proration of the award i.e. 2 credit hours enrolled = the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 2 credit hours - or - 1 credit hour enrolled = the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 1 credit hour.)
