A Note from the  CAS C Staff: 
Greetings CASC'ers,

As a reminder the CASC Office is now located in suite 3640 of the School of Social Work Building.  To get to our new location, take the elevator to the third floor, and take a sharp right turn into the second wing, formerly the International Institute.

We also invite you to our Winter 2018 CASC Talk focusing on self-care hosted by UM Social Work Alum, Raina LaGrand., MPH, MSW, today Wednesday 28 from 6-8PM in RM 1840 ECC of the SSWB.

CAS C Classes

Course Substitution Request: If you do not see a course listed that you think should count for your CASC minor, please email the syllabus and a short paragraph about which cluster you think it should count for and why to cascminor@umich.edu.

Senior Audit
Please fill out your senior audit as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please schedule an appointment or visit drop-in to speak with CASC Academic Advisor Joe Galura.

Course Enrollment Petitions:  Students must submit a petition found on the CASC website to enroll in SW 300, 305 (section 1 & 2), and SW 401. If there are any questions or concerns, please email   cascminor@umich.edu .

CASC-MSW Preferred Admissions Program
Students pursuing a Community Action and Social Change (CASC) minor may apply to the Office of Student Services in the School of Social Work for the Preferred Admission Program leading to a Master of Social Work (MSW). This means you are able to apply to the school as both as junior and senior. Additionally, students will mark a "CASC Preferred Admissions" box on their application that will be taken into account in the decision making process. For admission criteria and more information visit the preferred admissions website.

CASC Course Offerings
London Course on Community Action
The focus of this course is on multicultural issues and community action in contemporary London. It's a good experience for students to learn how issues of race, ethnicity, gender and other identities relate to social justice in a different society than the USA. This course will take place May-June of 2018. Learn more.

CASC TALK: Self-Care Transcend the Slogan 
This workshop will help you identify what caring for yourself looks like and provide tools for doing so, including yoga, mindfulness, and wellness planning. It will be hosted by UM Social Work Alum Raina LaGrand who is  a certified yoga teacher, wellness educator, and clinical social worker. She is passionate about holding space for folks to safely and courageously (re)connect with themselves and actualize their dreams and desires. RSVP. Check out our Facebook event

Winter 2018 CASC Social Justice Internship Fund 
Supported by the generosity of CASC alumni and friends, The CASC Social Justice Internship seeks to offset a portion of students' cost of living to encourage participation in social justice in a community setting. Declared CASC Minor students are eligible to apply for grants of up to $500 during the  Spring/Summer of 2018. Deadline is March 29. Learn more & apply.

Campus News & Events
Arab Heritage Month 2018 
Arab Heritage Month on campus began its celebration February 17 and will conclude in mid- April. The events this year will focus  on broadening the conversation about inclusion and exclusion, with the hopes of engaging in dialogue about the nuances of language, culture, and geography. 2018 Winter Detroit Speaks Series 
Each week this lecture series will feature different Detroit-based speakers and guests who will explore the given topic and engage the students through a combination of formal remarks, presentations, and public discussion. For more information, visit the SID site.

Keeping it Real: Crossing Political Chasms through Dialogue 
This interactive workshop will focus on skill-building and practice around political dialogue. 
Perspective-taking, and practicing how to actively listen to others while feeling heard yourself will be key components of this session.

Decolonizing Public Health Student Lead Teach In 
This is a student-initiated, organized, and facilitated event focused on  providing students with an understanding of the history of public health while transforming the School of Public Health curriculum to meet the needs and concerns of students.   Topics include American Indian Health, Racial Disparities in Maternal Mortality, Disaggregation of Data & Racial Disparities for Asian Americans, Arab & Muslim Identities, Mass Incarceration, and more!

U-M Humanity First Presents: Gala for Guatemala 
The gala will feature an array of speakers including both experts and students at the University of Michigan covering topics in public health The proceeds will go towards Women's Health Camps in Guatemala with a mission to treat and educate women on issues such as nutrition, pregnancy, domestic violence and mental health. Health Equity Research Conference: Wayne state University 
This conference is dedicated to promoting health equity through discussion. The conference focuses on the impact of discrimination on health. Who Can Relate? Concert 
The Who Can Relate? Outreach Committee invites you to a Mental Health Awareness Concert featuring Grammy-nominated artist Logic. They will host a week of events featuring mental health activities, speakers, and performances to address mental health stigma. Learn more.

Out of the Darkness at U of M 
OOTD is a suicide prevention organization on campus and they are looking for volunteers for their second annual OOTD Campus Walk on April 8
Volunteering entails helping to set up, clean up, guiding the walkers, serving food and drinks, and much more. Volunteers can choose which task/shift they prefer, and will also be able to participate during the walk. Every volunteer will receive a free OOTD volunteer shirt. Please note that volunteers are required to attend one of three orientations at the beginning of April.Learn more.

Yom Hashoa We Will Never Forget 
Every year, to honor Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), SHARE (Students for Holocaust Awareness, Remembrance, and Education) hosts a 24-hour long vigil in the Diag, where they continuously read names of those who perished during the Holocaust. SHARE is looking for student volunteers to read out names during the 24- hour period. Sign up.

Jobs and Internships
Michigan Active Citizens alternative Spring break (MAC-ASB) Site Leader. 
This commitment requires attending weekly education and training sessions, working collaboratively with a co-site leader, and fundraising for your trip. Site leaders will also work with amazing participants on topic education and group bonding! Previous MAC-ASB experience is not required; applicants should have a passion for service-learning, strong facilitation skills, and enthusiasm. Application deadline is March 30. Applebaum Internship Program 
Make a difference in Detroit this summer with the Applebaum Internship Program, which offers hands-on experience, funding, and professional development to students interning in non-profits and arts organizations in the city and the surrounding areas. Participants join a cohort of students who are eligible to receive $2,500 to $5,000 each in merit- and need-based funding for the summer. Deadline is April 1.  Learn more and apply.

Peace Corps Campus Ambassador Internship
Campus   Ambassadors   are university students who work closely with Peace Corps recruiters to raise awareness on   campus   about Peace Corps and our opportunities abroad. Deadline is April 6. Learn more and apply

Luce Scholars Program

Ginsberg Community Engagement Leadership Fellows 
The Ginsberg Center is offering a year-long fellowship for U-M juniors and seniors to expand their knowledge, skills, and leadership experiences to address community impact. Fellows participate in ongoing training and mentorship, connect as a cohort, and engage in critically reflective practice while working with a local community organization. Deadline April 16.
