FLOURISHING FOR A LIFETIME
A Positive Psychology Perspective
February Monday Monthly Meeting
Would you like to improve your level of happiness, life satisfaction and wellbeing as you age? If so, t his fun, interactive program is for you! You will learn how to practice evidence-based strategies used in Positive Psychology to face life's challenges and adversities as we age, with greater optimism and resilience.

Positive Psychology is the science that explores how happiness and well-being can be improved and sustained by building on our strengths, rather than fixating on our weaknesses. It differs from traditional psychology by focusing on what is right with you as a way to build on intrinsic strengths and abilities.

Hope Levy has twenty-plus years of experience in education and training, gerontology and career development. The common thread throughout her career is a passion for lifelong learning. She has provided professional and personal development programs in educational environments such as City College San Francisco and University of Hawaii, as well as to organizations through her consulting practice, There's Always Hope. Hope holds an MA in Gerontology and an MA in Special Education, both from San Francisco State University.

PLAN B
WHAT WILL YOU DO
WHEN LIFE THROWS YOU A CURVE BALL?
March Monday Monthly Meeting
We have all lived long enough to know that our lives may not always move forward on the smooth path that we anticipate.  Perhaps you have already negotiated the end of a relationship, an illness or loss of a job. A major life change can be scary to consider. Let's explore together. We can't anticipate what changes will come our way and plan for them or can we?

Questions to ponder before the meeting:   Think about elders you know or have known.
  • What were some of their challenges?
  • How did they cope?
  • How might you have done things differently if those were your challenges?
  • Are there elements in your current living arrangements that could become barriers?
  • What changes could you make if you suffered a financial setback?
  • How can you strengthen your social network to include supporting each other when one of you needs extra help?

Thought provoking resources:
When:  Monday, March 9;  5:30 pm
Where:   50 California 10th Floor San Francisco
(one block from the Embarcadero BART, reduced parking rates in Embarcadero Buildings)
Cost:  Free
MEMBERSHIP CONTEST
 Help to Build Our Chapter!

From now until our June meeting, we are running a contest to increase the membership in our chapter. We believe that TTN has lots to offer women in terms of personal growth and social interaction and would love to have more women in the Bay Area join us.

While we offer our monthly meetings free to members and non-members alike, there are additional benefits, such as participation in and creation of special interest groups (SIGS) that come with membership.  Our SIGs offer the opportunity to share our interests and develop relationships at a deeper level.

If you are a current member and recruit a new member who joins by the beginning of June, you will be entered into the contest and could win prizes at our June 8 th Social Event.  Just send a message to the Steering Committee at  [email protected]  with your name and the name of the new member.
More details on the prizes in upcoming newsletters!

NATIONAL CELEBRATES 20 YEARS!
Do you remember what you were doing in March 2000?  You were probably wondering how you were going to get everything done, managed, scheduled, coordinated ... like all the other busy women you knew.  Christine Millen and Charlotte Frank - having recently left their high-powered jobs - were creating The Transition Network around a dining room table in New York City.  Christine was leaving a career as a partner at Deloitte and Charlotte had been in charge of contracting for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Christine and Charlotte knew what they wanted to STOP doing but not what they wanted to START doing. To answer that all-important "what's next" question, they founded a dynamic community of women who support each other through change. Today, The Transition Network has grown from a small group of women to an organization of 3,000 members in 14 chapters coast to coast and others who participate online as National members.

As we celebrate our 20th anniversary this year, it's time to Honor our Past and Imagine our Future.  Each of our chapters is planning a local celebration during 2020.  And we're excited to announce that there will be a big national birthday celebration in New York on Monday, June 8. All members are invited to attend.
The New York City chapter is hosting our national celebration.  Festivities will include a luncheon, afternoon program, and evening entertainment. Members who'd like to spend the weekend in New York can take part in gallery tours, sightseeing, and receptions with other TTN members from around the country.

What a wonderful way to kick off the next 20 years!! Stay tuned for more details on the celebrations in all chapters across the country. Happy Anniversary, TTN!
SANTA FE MEMBER
SEEKS SPACE IN THE Bay Area

The following email comes from Sandra McKnight, a TTN Member in the Santa Fe Chapter.  If you are able to help Sandra, please reply directly to her at  [email protected] or phone or text her at  505-310-8010.

I am a current and active member of the Santa Fe New Mexico chapter of TTN and am coming to the Bay Area to stay from Feb. 22-April 30th.  I am looking for a place to stay for that time:  to rent an in-law, studio, or share a living space, etc.  The spring here in Santa Fe is a high allergy season which forces me to leave here each year.
I am financially stable and still run a consulting practice, www.voicepowerstudios.com and have been going to the Bay Area  for the past 7 years ( because of allergies ) and have Bay area personal references.   I am also a performer doing my one woman show of stories and vocals called "The Magic of Happiness"   www.sandramcknight.com

If there is anyone in the Bay Area Chapter who can help me sublet, rent or housesit when they are traveling or put me together with someone who might have a place for me to stay I would be most appreciative.  I love being a part of TTN and would like to support a TTN member.

I look forward to your response.

Warmest Wishes,
Sandra

Everyone Knows Memory Fails as You Age
But Everyone Is Wrong

This is a fascinating article sent in by TTNer, Joan Varrone.  Written by  Daniel J. Levitin who is a neuroscientist and the author of "Successful Aging: A Neuroscientist Explores the Power and Potential of Our Lives," it brings a new perspective  on aging and memory.  To read the full article , click HERE.

" We started The Grand
to share human knowledge across generations."

TTNer, Hope Levy  came across this new group with some very interesting programs that she thought would be interesting for our members.  The Grand says, "We're a community of lifelong learners who actively support each other in making major professional and personal life decisions.  We're here to help you navigate the journey with curriculum-based learning, experienced guides, and trusted confidantes."  They have many programs in San Francisco.  Coming in February is "How to Make Friends Across Generations."

Hope says,  "I think the topic of making intergenerational friendships is a fascinating one. And we already know how beneficial it is to aging well."
