New Developments in Nepal, Thailand and Sri Lanka

Elephant Aid International (EAI) Founder Carol Buckley is back in Attapulgus, GA, after a busy four weeks in Asia.
- Carol taught foot care workshops organized by the Elephant Owners Association in Nepal and The Elephant Conservation Center in Thailand. She also trimmed the feet of 70 elephants.
- Carol visited Zoo Dehiwala and Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka, having been invited by the country's Finance Ministry to start the process of converting both facilities to chain- and dominance-free management.

- In Nepal, Carol and EAI have been invited to design chain-free corrals and improved mahout training at the Barahi Jungle Lodge, where four female elephants, including a mother with her 14-year-old and 4-year-old daughters, live. Barahi Jungle Lodge will be the second privately owned lodge in the country to go chain free.

EAI is proud to announce its sponsorship of Dr. Bablu Thakur's year-long research project, "Foot Infections in Captive/Working Asian Elephants Engaged in Tourism & Wildlife Patrolling Duties in Nepal." Dr. Bablu Thakur is a veterinary science scholar in the Department of Surgery and Pharmacology at the Agriculture and Forestry University in Rampur, Chitwan, Nepal.

EAI has also established an elephant foot care internship program for Nepali veterinarians and students in agriculture, elephant care and conservation. Our goal is to build a network of skilled elephant caregivers who will continue to expand foot care programs.

Bring on the Barn!
Construction for the barn at Elephant Refuge North America (ERNA) is underway! After clearing the ground, we poured the corner pillar building supports and floor for the caregiver area.
This initial phase of construction is supported by a generous $100,000 grant from the Nature Defense Foundation (NDF).
If you want to make an impact, now is the ideal time to donate! NDF is matching every donation toward the barn construction (up to $50,000), making your donation go twice as far!

Carol to Keynote Free the Elephants Conference
Carol will offer the keynote address at the Free the Elephants Conference & Film Festival, April 27-29, in Portland, OR. Carol will speak on "Revolution of a Movement - Creating Real Change for Elephants" on the morning of the 27th. She'll introduce a screening of UNCHAINED that evening and join a panel on "Community Involvement - Bridging Cultural Divides/Healing the Elephant-Human Conflict" the morning of the 28th.
