From Mark ...
The major themes of 2019, according to those who study the frequency of cultural conversation, include immigration, the impeachment hearings and - fake news. The idea of fake news refers to published information intentionally designed to mislead. Fake news has many names: "propaganda," "misinformation," "yellow journalism," "libel" and even "lies." Yet recently, some people have broadened the concept of "fake news" to mean any reports or political news that they don't like - regardless of the veracity of the information. Then, not only the news but the source of the news is attacked. It's a new version of "kill the messenger." While this exploded on the scene in a broad way last year, the cry of "fake news" has a much longer history. Just ask Jesus. How are we to decipher 'fake news' from the Good News?

Do You Know Your "Star Word"?
During last week's worship, Mark introduced us to 'Star' words - one word printed on a card that each of us chose from a basket passed up and down the pews.  We are encouraged to think on our word, pray on our word, share it with others or keep it to ourselves.  If you weren't in worship last Sunday, you can still choose your Star Word.  Look for the basket on the Welcome Center in the Narthex this Sunday - and find your Star Word!
Coming Up...
One More Week With Us - Then the MOVE Room at the Inn

Broadway's time as a host site for Room at the Inn is winding down, so if you have not yet signed up to serve, please do!  We can always use volunteers for all shifts, but particularly need Morning Hosts (5:15 -8:00 a.m.) and Evening Hosts (the 6:15-11:30 p.m. shifts).
When it comes time to pack everything up and load it in the big truck on February 2, it will be all hands on deck!  As soon as the Guests leave for the Warming Center at First Christian Church, we can begin cleaning, sorting and packing.  We will particularly need folks who can break down our cots for the move, beginning as early as 10:00 a.m.  Members who load supplies into the truck should come to the CLC after the conclusion of worship on Sunday, February 2.
If you have questions about volunteering, please contact  Debby Graham.

Reconciliation Book Study Kicks Off Feb. 9
One book study, two multi-state pilgrimages and one local pilgrimage later, Broadway and the Race Forward coalition of local churches are still working to shine a bright light on racial issues in today's world.  The coalition of churches is now called Race Forward, and the group kicks off 2020 with a shared book study of Healing the Racial Divide, by St. Louis author Terrell Carter.  Dr. Carter will join us on Sunday, February 9, for our kick-off event for the book, and will speak on racial issues today.  The event will
conclude with a potluck dinner, with Mission and Outreach Ministry providing the main dish.
Dr. Carter will return in May, at the end of the book study, to discuss the experiences of our groups.  This will be unique "before and after" look at the book and the shared experiences of each reading group.
If you would like more information, or to RSVP, please contact   Don Day.
Register Now for 2020 Women's Retreat
You don't have to go on a bear hunt to find your registration brochure for the February 21-22, 2020 Women's Retreat - it is in your church mailbox!   You can also find a brochure at all Welcome Center, and what a coincidence - you can download one on our website or click here
This year's retreat will be held at Broadway, so no need to drive farther than church!  There are four attendance options available to fit even the most complicated schedule - so register soon and discover how women "bear" up for the challenges of life!

Middle School Retreat
The middle school years are a challenge - for educators, for parents, and especially for those who are living it.  For those who are in the midst of this time of peer pressure, insecurity and doubt - there is comfort in being a part of a group.  Broadway's group of middle schoolers will join in Retreat on Friday, February 13-Saturday, February 14.  Registrations are being taken now for this time to share in the safety of your church home.  A registration fee of $10 is requested.
El Salvador Mission Trip Is June  6-12
Broadway's partnership with Enlace goes back over ten years, and even though our mission team traveled to Puerto Rico last fall, we knew that we would return to the rural countryside of El Salvador!
Our Mission Team will spend a week in El Salvador and possibly some time in Guatemala this summer.  Trip details will be available in the coming weeks, but for now, check your calendars and consider joining the team.  This trip is available to adults and older teens - check with  Debby for more information.
Chili Cook-Off Moves to March!
Broadway's Chili Cook-Off has become a very popular event over the years.  Last year's Cook-Off was re-scheduled and re-re-scheduled due to the winter weather, so for 2020, Fellowship Ministry has decided to move the Cook-Off into March and make it a part of our Congregational Meeting!   Be sure to put this new date on your own calendar, and we look forward to a "spirited" and friendly Cook-Off competition on Sunday, March 8.
Are You Missing A Crock Pot?
It is easy to forget a dish or serving platter that you may have brought to church, and Crock Pots are no exception!  Your Crock Pot may be resting on the Table of Forgotten Crockery in Fellowship Hall!  Please check your cabinets to make sure that you know where your Crock Pot is...don't let it migrate into the Sea of Habitat Sale Donations!
