Dear Parents,

Long Winter Weekend is coming to a close and has provided a welcome opportunity for us to rest and recharge. For those on campus, we’ve seen the return of winter and the mountains to the west are blanketed in snow.

As we look ahead to March, I am writing to share an update about how the School is responding to impacts and concerns resulting from coronavirus and to communicate information about our plans to support students who may be unable to travel for Spring Break.

  • Since the outbreak, we have been monitoring information and recommendations for best practices from the U.S. State Department, Centers for Disease Control, and the World Health Organization.
  • Our health center is also communicating with the El Paso County Health Department for recommendations and guidance.
  • We have been collaborating with our membership organizations (The Association of Boarding Schools, and National Association of Independent Schools, and the Association of Colorado Independent Schools) for guidance on best practices specific to boarding schools.

Our students’ health, safety, and well-being are always our top priority, so we have taken proactive measures to keep our students and community safe. Among them, we have canceled our interim trip to China and designed a new trip to Hawaii in its place. Additionally, our health center staff has done wellness checks on any student who traveled from mainland China before the travel ban.

Most importantly, we are working on supporting our Asian students who are unable to travel home for Spring Break, including what we would need to do to keep campus open. Some students are staying with family or friends within the U.S., and we are also looking into third party, educational travel groups, who will offer two-week programs.

Last, we are also seeking help from domestic families who would be interested in hosting an international student for Spring Break. If you are interested in hosting a student please contact the deans’ office.

I hope this letter answers some of the questions or concerns you may have, but please feel free to reach out if you have additional questions.

Sincerely,

Dean of Students
