The Switzer Foundation staff and trustees wish all of our fellows and colleagues a very happy new year! We hope 2020 has started off well for each of you. As we reflect on events of the past year and decade, we feel incredibly grateful to work with such an outstanding group of leaders that comprise the Switzer Fellows Network. Over the years, you have not only improved our environment and communities but also renewed our sense of hope and optimism. We look forward to seeing what Switzer Fellows do in 2020 and the next decade.

Engaging with policy via Twitter
Twitter has emerged as one of the best places to connect with and potentially influence policymakers on social media.
We have invited some of the Switzer Network's most prolific tweeters for a panel discussion (Tuesday, January 28th) on what has been effective and ineffective in their own use of the platform for policy. They will be discussing best practices, recommendations and resources they have found useful in their development as Twitter influencers.

Fellows in the DC area, please save the date for our annual fellows' dinner in conjunction with the 2020 Spring Retreat! We hope you will come and meet the 2019 fellows and Executive Director Sarah Reed, and re-connect with each other and Switzer Foundation staff. Grant outcomes: Working group established for migratory bird conservation
Phalaropes are tiny shorebirds that cover tens of thousands of miles in their migrations between North and South America. They especially depend on large salt lakes in Western North America and in the South American Andes, where they eat brine flies and shrimp at these special, globally threatened habitats. With help from a Switzer Network Innovation Grant, Ryan Carle and Margaret Rubega planned and convened an international working group to fill critical data gaps that are essential to conservation action.

Cassandra Brooks: Part of largest ever all-women expedition to Antarctica
Cassandra Brooks recently returned from a three-week Antarctic expedition organized by Homeward Bound Project, a worldwide initiative that began in 2016 to "heighten the influence and impact of women in making decisions that shape our planet," according to the organization. She served as a science faculty member for the 100 STEMM women on the trip.

Bruce A. Handley (1945-2019)
1990 Fellow Bruce Handley of Sacramento died peacefully of heart failure at home on December 8, 2019. With his decades of experience, Bruce guided development of watershed specific protocols, restoration techniques and programs to establish sound stewardship practices in California. Bruce was very proud to be a Switzer Fellow and over the years served as an interviewer and mentor as well as being a Leadership Grant recipient.

Bruni Pizarro is currently serving as Interim Executive Director of JUNTA for Progressive Action in New Haven, Connecticut. She also contributed to the city's new mayor's transition plan on environment and climate change.
Zully Juarez was part of a University of Southern California team that published an article in IJERPH about the program they implemented that incorporated air monitoring and storytelling with youth in environmental justice organizations around the Los Angeles area.
Miyuki Hino is now Assistant Professor in City and Regional Planning at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
