CFX EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

CFX is happy to introduce Emily Brown, who joined the CFX family in May as the new Manager of Public Affairs.

What does your role involve?
As Manager of Public Affairs, I engage and educate the local community on CFX's various activities and initiatives while building positive relationships with the residents and businesses served by our roads. I also represent CFX at events and meetings in Central Florida, work with elected officials to ensure constituent needs or concerns are addressed, and support our communications team in increasing awareness about the benefits of having an E-PASS.

What did you do before joining CFX?
Prior to working for CFX, I served under Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer as Economic Development Coordinator for the City of Orlando. My most humbling assignment during my tenure at the City of Orlando was contributing to the response effort in the aftermath of the Pulse tragedy on June 12, 2016.

What do you like best about your new job?
I truly enjoy being out in the community, cultivating relationships with the residents and business owners who make Central Florida one of the most dynamic regions in America.

What do you think sets CFX apart from other road-building agencies?
In one word: innovation. CFX is a forward-thinking agency committed to building the best roads in the region by using technology to create a safer and more efficient driving experience for its users.

CFX REMEMBERS PULSE

CFX commemorated the first anniversary of the Pulse tragedy by illuminating Lake Underhill Bridge on State Road 408 in the colors of the LGBTQ flag. The display was meant to honor victims of the June 12, 2016, mass shooting and show CFX's support for diversity and inclusion.

CFX NETWORK EXPANDING TO BREVARD COUNTY

On June 2, Governor Rick Scott signed House Bill 299 into law, approving the expansion of CFX's regional network to include Brevard County. The bill was sponsored by Representative Tom Goodson (R-District 51) and Senator Debbie Mayfield (R-District 17).
Brevard County Commissioner Jim Barfield

Effective July 1, Brevard County will gain a seat on CFX's Governing Board. The chair of the Brevard County Board of County Commissioners appointed District 2 Commissioner Jim Barfield to the CFX Board as its 10th member. "The entire east Central Florida economy continues to grow, and Brevard County is an important part of that growth," Commissioner Barfield said. "Now the CFX Board can plan for the transportation needs of the future for the entire region."

SR 414/MARDEN ROAD HALF-INTERCHANGE OPENS

Motorists now have another way to access SR 414 thanks to the newly opened half-interchange at Marden Road in south Apopka. The half-interchange, built by MMI Development in partnership with the City of Apopka, allows motorists traveling west on SR 414 to exit at Marden Road. Motorists can also enter SR 414 at Marden Road to travel east. The new half-interchange is designed to accommodate future growth south of Apopka, which is expected to include industrial areas, office and retail space as well as residential units.

WEKIVA PARKWAY UPDATE

CFX is near the end of the road on building its first phase of the Wekiva Parkway. Scheduled to open in July, the 4.5-mile section runs from Connector Road to Kelly Park Road. CFX has three more sections to build, for a total of 10 miles of the parkway.

CFX's first section will give motorists a glimpse of the parkway's aesthetic and environmentally friendly design treatments. This portion of the parkway will introduce motorists to visual features such as rustic stone reliefs painted in earth tones so they blend into the natural surroundings.

Arched bridges also add to the visual enhancements while providing corridors for wildlife to safely pass underneath the parkway.

SR 408 EASTERN EXTENSION WORKSHOP

With significant population growth expected in the SR 50/SR 408 area, CFX is conducting a planning, development and engineering study to determine alternative locations for the extension. On June 8th, nearly 600 attendees gathered at Corner Lake Middle School to hear about the proposed alternatives and provide comments.

A final SR 408 Eastern Extension Public Meeting is scheduled for October 2017. The study is expected to finish by the end of this year.  Click here  to view the fact sheet with details on the study.

ARNOLD PALMER EXPRESSWAY DESIGNATED
Senator David Simmons and Representative Mike Miller

The Arnold Palmer Expressway is the official designation of a western section of State Road 408 (East-West Expressway), commemorating the legacy of the late professional golfer who made Orlando's Bay Hill community his winter home for nearly 50 years.

Sponsored by Representative Mike Miller (R-District 47) and Senator David Simmons (R-District 9) and signed into law June 14 by Governor Rick Scott, the designation honors Palmer as a world-famous sports icon, philanthropist and goodwill ambassador.

"The naming of a roadway is rare and should only be done for those who have truly made a difference in our community. Arnold Palmer is one of those people," said CFX Board member and Golf Channel Chief Financial Officer Jay Madara. "The Central Florida Expressway Authority is honored to have led the charge to rename the western end of SR 408 in his honor."

Appropriate signs and markers have been placed on SR 408 to inform motorists they are traveling on a highway named to memorialize Palmer, who passed away Sept. 25, 2016. He was 87.
