Research conducted by the Pediatric Physicians' Organization at Boston Children's Hospital, in collaboration with members of the Children's Vision Massachusetts Coalition, concludes that instrument-based vision screening for preschool-aged children can be effectively implemented into primary care practice, results in substantially improved rates of completed vision screening at well-child visits, and may result in a reduction in unnecessary referrals to eye care specialists. Members of the Children's Vision Massachusetts Coalition joined other vision advocates from across the country to meet with members of the US House and Senate, and their staff, to discuss the importance of vision and eye health programs and research. The group asked elected officials to: * Provide $3.3 million in Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 to strengthen vision and eye health efforts of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). * $3.5 million to support the Maternal and Child Health Bureau's (MCHB) National Center for Children's Vision and Eye Health (the Center) in developing a public health infrastructure to promote and ensure a continuum of vision and eye health care for children. * Protect "essential health benefits" as defined under the Affordable Care Act, which includes children's comprehensive eye exams and vision screenings and preventive services for chronic diseases, in any Senate legislative companion to the House-passed American Health Care Act. * Provide $800 million to the National Eye Institute in FY 2018. * Provide at least $3,294,000 for the Glaucoma Project at CDC in FY 2018. * Join the Congressional Vision Caucus. The CVMA advocates visited the offices of Congressman Moulton, Congressman Neal, Congresswoman Clark, Congressman McGovern, Congressman Lynch, Congressman Capuano, Senator Markey and Senator Warren.

Keep Fourth of July Eye Safe
The
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
reports that
fireworks devices were involved in an estimated 11,100 injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms in 2016;31% of those injured were less than 15 years old; and burns from fireworks are the most common injury to all parts of the body, except the eyes, where contusions, lacerations, and foreign bodies occur more frequently. According to the
American Academy of Pediatrics, approximately one third of eye injuries from fireworks result in permanent blindness. Keep your child's eyes safe this Fourth of July by
viewing fireworks only at authorized public fireworks displays conducted by licensed operators.For more information
