Donors and Students Inspire each other at Annual Luncheon
Clark Mason and David Henwood of RBC Wealth Management pose with Foundation Scholarship recipients.
SPC Foundation donors, partners, students and college leadership celebrated the awarding of more than $1.8 million in scholarships to over 2,400 students during the 2016-17 academic year at the St. Petersburg College Foundation's 19th Annual Scholarship Luncheon on March 21.

More than 200 guests attended the event, sponsored by RBC Wealth Management and Emceed by Bay News 9's Veronica Cintron. SPC students Chelsea Echols and Malique Ferrette moved and inspired the audience with their stories of triumph and success. Malique Ferrette, said, "Words prove insufficient in expressing my gratitude for what you as donors have done for my life and for the lives of so many others. Yet still, I say on behalf of all SPC students.... thank you!"

Offering a donor's perspective, Mike Brewster, Chief Production Officer at Monin, spoke about his company's partnership with SPC and the impact scholarships have in developing our local workforce.

SPC President Tonjua Williams closed out the program and thanked the donors who support our students, saying "If it were not for you, we would have many students who would give up on their dreams." Williams said donors' generosity affects more than just our students. It impacts generations. "You've changed the lives of their children and the children to come," she said.

Transamerica Manager Bill Hull (center right) poses with Keys to Manhood Seminar attendees.
It was early and it was a Saturday, but SPC's Allstate campus was a buzz with excitement as middle school through college-aged students gathered for the annual Keys to Manhood Seminar on February 24.

Sponsored by Transamerica, the seminar included an impressive range of workshops focused on helping students succeed including, becoming financially fit, overcoming legal obstacles, and exploring career opportunities.

Michelle Christie Senior Community Financial Educator for GTE Financial works on a sample budget
with a student.
The highly interactive day included a luncheon sponsored by GTE Financial and a keynote address by Victor Young President and Co-Owner of Lamborghini Sarasota, BMW of Sarasota, Range Rover Ocala and Jaguar Ocala. Mr. Young encouraged the group to focus on the big picture and to trust themselves while keeping in mind that, "your name and who you are is your brand."
Keeping Students Engaged Through Real-World Training
SPC Natural Science Professor Dr. Ray Menard knows that as health care becomes more interdisciplinary in nature, nurses, doctors, lab technicians and pharmacists will be required to work in tandem to provide the best patient care possible. In order to prepare students in his Microbiology courses for future careers in health care, he works with them to design and execute laboratory experiments focused on infectious disease that are commonly used in a clinical setting. This hands-on learning is funded through the Foundation's Titan Achievement Grant Initiative.

As an integral part of the experience, students will also visit Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital later this month to meet with key hospital personnel. "By working with health care workers in a hospital setting, I hope to open doors for students who may not otherwise have this kind of opportunity. Additionally, they will learn the role of various health care workers, and also have a better understanding of hospital nursing," said Dr. Menard.

After the visit, students will prepare presentations about their experience and make connections between their coursework and the crucial job skills needed to excel in any health care setting.
