National Endowment for the Arts Budget Receives Increase in New Federal Budget Signed Today - Averts Elimination

Today, the 2018 Federal budget passed by Congress over the past two days was signed into law by the President, and it included a nearly $3 Million increase in funding for the National Endowment for the Arts. For a second year, the agency not only averted elimination (as proposed by the Trump Administration) but experienced a modest budget increase. "Much of the credit goes to bi-partisan friends in Congress who greatly value the role the arts play in our nation, such as Congressman Ken Calvert (R-Corona), who Chairs the House Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior," commented ArtsOC's President &CEO Rick Stein. Stein was in Washington, D.C. with 600 other arts leaders from around the nation ten days ago attending Americans for the Arts' Arts Advocacy Day. He visited Rep. Calvert's office with other California arts advocates.  More here.
Robert Duke Inspires Audience at 9th Creative Edge Lecture

Dr. Robert Duke (above center, standing) inspired hundreds of attendees at the Irvine Barclay Theatre in delivering ArtsOC's 9th Annual Creative Edge Lecture on Tuesday. The University of Texas at Austin professor--in both the school of music and the medical school--is an expert in the field of learning. In his talk, he emphasized the role of authentic personal expression in learning, and he implored educators to nurture that regardless of the different pace of learning at which various students progress. The annual lecture is presented by Arts Orange County in collaboration with the Orange County Department of Education and the 4th District PTA. ArtsOC expresses its gratitude to The Boeing Company, which has been the title sponsor of each year's lecture. Additional thanks go to these sponsors: Phil and Mary Lyons, OCounty Department of Education, Haskell & White LLP, Judith Posnikoff, Janet and Walkie Ray, UCI Claire Trevor School of the Arts, Susan K. Hori, Kay Mortenson, Orange County Community Foundation, Ellen Breitman.
