Statham Elementary School is now among 30 schools in Georgia to be a part of the "Feed My School" Program. Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black says, "we are able to change the purchasing habits of a generation from the time they enter our school systems. Our aim with the Feed My School program is to create a focus on Georgia Grown products for these young students."
"Barrow County Schools welcomes the opportunity to showcase our farmers, not only in Barrow County, but also in the surrounding counties." said Pamela LeFrois, Director of School Nutrition for BCSS. Statham Elementary is excited to host the Georgia Grown - Feed my School for a Week program for the next three years. Feed my School week starts Monday, March 26 and goes through Friday, March 30. Georgia Grown items will be featured on the menu along with fun filled activities.

Taking Economics Outside the Classroom
Mrs. Massei's and Ms. Scott's gifted classes from Kennedy Elementary School took a field trip to the Winder Library for their exhibit THINKING MONEY. Students had a great time learning about wants vs. meets, earning and paying interest, rainy day funds, fraud, playing money games, and enjoying story time about where money comes from. This goes perfectly with the economics units in the classroom. A great way to incorporate our public library and it did not cost "money".
THINKING MONEY is a museum-quality exhibition that is traveling to 50 U.S. public libraries between 2016-2018. The Winder Public Library was the only host site in Georgia.
BCSS Youth Behavioral Health Summit
The Barrow County School Social Workers were given an opportunity to utilize grant money through Title IV to assist students with mental health concerns in the school system. They determined, with all the mental health and school safety concerns facing school systems, the most effective way to help our students was to provide community mental health professionals, i.e., - school counselors, school social workers, and local mental health providers with a high quality youth behavioral health summit. "Knowledge is power and we want our students to be provided with the best quality services and support they need to be successful," said BCSS social worker Jennifer Justice in describing the idea to host the conference.
Over 200 attendees were able to share expert information from specialist in the areas of autism/asperger's, adolescent psychiatric medications, trauma based therapies, and treatment for early childhood experiences. The event was held at Bethlehem Church and sponsored by Northeast Georgia Medical Center/Laurelwood, Silver & Archibald, LLP, Akins Ford, The Social Empowerment Center, Barrow County Health Department, Bold Crossings Counseling & Consulting, BrandBank, Care Source, MedLink, The Council on Alcohol and Drugs, The Tree House, UGA - School of Social Work, Barrow County Family Connection, and Bethlehem Church. BCSS social worker Stephanie Byrd said "we are overwhelmed with the support we have received and look forward to having this event for many years to come."
