College & University Students Learn About Suicide Prevention
The Community Education and Outreach team visited several colleges and universities in the last month, teaching students about suicide risk factors and how to befriend those in need. At Boston College, Northeastern University, Brandeis University, William James College, and Simmons College, the discussion around prevention strategies and safety planning aimed to prepare those students soon entering the work force to de-stigmatize suicide.
Some of the feedback from the college and university trainings included:
"This was an eye opener for me."
"The training was incredible. The presenter's knowledge and use of language was highly valued. I personally was very nervous this would be too triggering and found this to be extremely educational and useful."
"This was one of the best trainings I have attended."
"I've been a clinician for 20+ years. This was a worthwhile refresher for me."
We are happy to provide training for any group that is supporting those at a risk for suicide, regardless of the population
. We encourage you to schedule a workshop for your organization.

Grief Support Training Strengthens Samaritans Community
The Grief Support Services (GSS) team has been hard at work with training volunteer SafePlace facilitators this month! With four new volunteers and eight veteran volunteers honing their skills, GSS continues to expand the Samaritans community to help support more people who have been impacted by a loss from suicide.
Led by clinical consultant John (Jack) Jordan, PhD., GSS Director Debbie DiMasi, and GSS Manager Emily Britt, volunteers learn about many different concepts and techniques to ensure that they are well-equipped to facilitate discussion among those who are grieving. Beyond learning about bereavement and mourning, volunteers are taught about the impact of suicide on families and common feelings among survivors.
GSS volunteers also have been personally impacted by a loss to suicide and are at a place in their own healing which allows them to help others as they travel a similar path. Volunteers facilitate SafePlace peer-support groups and participate in home visits to individuals and families looking for one-on-one support.
As always, we cannot thank our volunteers enough. If you are interested in becoming a Grief Support Services volunteer, please complete the Volunteer Interest Form below, and we will contact you shortly.
