Dear Parents / Guardians, Students, Staff, and Friends of the Sanborn Regional High School Community. Here are your latest important announcements from Sanborn Regional High School:

Graduation Date Set for June 15, 2018
A Message From Principal Brian M. Stack

Dear Seniors,
It is hard to believe your time at Sanborn is almost over! This is an exciting time of year with many events and activities culminating with graduation set for Friday, June 15, 2018 . Congratulations to all seniors on your many accomplishments.
If weather permits, we will hold graduation on the library lawn. In the event of poor weather, we may have to hold graduation in the gymnasium. If this is the case all attendees will need a ticket to enter the gym. The week of graduation you will receive eight (8) admission tickets for the gymnasium ceremony. That same week, we will also hold a lottery to distribute any extra tickets that we can to families that need more than 8 tickets. Due to fire code regulations, we may not be able to accommodate all requests for additional tickets. You are encouraged to ask your classmates if they have extra tickets they could give you if you need more than eight.

The following is a list of senior activities for the remainder of the school year. Seniors who are on the "probationary" graduation list are not permitted to participate in senior activities and should speak to their counselor to find out what they need to do to be removed from probation. Please note the mandatory activities and graduation practices on June 14 and 15. Senior Spotlight : Maggie Rasmussen
An Article by Teacher Brian Gray

Catherine "Maggie" Rasmussen is a graduating senior this year at Sanborn. Maggie has truly made her impact on the school in the community, in the classroom and on the academic fields. Any teacher that had the pleasure of having Maggie in class knows that she is a special student who is hardworking, inquisitive and a great role model. Maggie has challenged herself in the classroom with Honors Classes, AP Classes and even took challenging online courses such as learning Mandarin. Maggie has earned many academic honors here at Sanborn and will have a well decorated sash come graduation time. She is a member of multiple honor societies, active in student council, a member of the key club at Sanborn, part of the yearbook club,  a scholar athlete and is in the conversation for one of the top students of her class. She is truly a one of a kind student but she is also an accomplished 3 sport athlete.

Maggie is the epitome of a great teammate and a leader on her sports teams. She was the captain of her soccer team and a member of the Varsity team for the past 4 years playing any position the team needed and starting in goalie her senior year. She has also been a valuable member of the girls basketball program here at Sanborn. She has been a contributing member of 2 Undefeated Junior Varsity Basketball seasons and a valuable role player on last year's historic girls basketball team resulting in our first home playoff win in program history. She is a valuable member of the basketball team this year as they are once again poised to be in the playoffs and near the top of their division. Maggie can always be counted on for maximum effort and defense, pushing her teammates to the best of their abilities. Maggie's best sport is softball and she has been an integral part of their program since freshman year. Each of the last few years, her team has made it to the playoffs and have had impressive records. She has been a starter and leader for the team making great defensive plays on the field and providing timely hitting at the plate. She is poised to be a valuable captain and member of the softball team this spring. All of her coaches would describe her as extremely coachable, a great teammate and driven to be successful. She is supportive of her teammates and is a valuable leader to have on your team. As you can tell, Maggie has been very busy getting the most out of her Sanborn Experience and will be realizing a dream of her's next fall.

Maggie has been driven to become a member of the Navy when she graduates college.Throughout her rigorous high school coursework and extracurriculars, she have been preparing and training for this opportunity. She even dedicated herself during the summer to receive trainings and preparing for a career in the Navy.  She will be attending Norwich University next fall and will be well on her way to that dream. She was also recruited to play softball at the college level for the Norwich Cadets. Maggie will leave some big shoes to fill for upcoming student athletes at Sanborn but we look forward to hearing all the great accomplishments she will achieve in the future.

Senior Spotlight : Spencer McElroy
An Article by Teacher Jeff Adams
Spencer McElroy has a passion for anything that has to do with technology.  Mr. Kelly says "Spencer is interested in what makes things work". Spencer built a computer with Legos for his Shark Tank Project in Mr. Kelly's class, which was part of a Sanborn PTO funded event.  Spencer is an avid book worm. He loves books and most of the time if you see Spencer in the hallway carrying his computer with his head phones on he is listening to an audio book expanding his knowledge.
Spencer walked into Google Apps class his freshman year and I was amazed how well he worked with technology, he would learn how something worked and then help his fellow students with the technology.  Junior year Spencer was enrolled in Creating Games class where he once again amazed me how he had the ability to be shown new software and create something beyond the expectations of the assignment. If I was ever busy with one student I could ask Spencer to help find the programming issue the other student could not get to work.   Spencer was the kid in computer class you would go to if you could not figure out how to get something to work.
Spencer is currently attending Seacoast School of Technology (SST) where he is enrolled in  computer science course. He hopes to use his experience and knowledge he has gained at SST to upload his talent into a computer science degree at University of New Hampshire, Northern Essex Community College of Great Bay Community College.
AP Biology Trip to Harvard University Science Center
An Article by Science Teacher Liz Richardson

On March 20 th , 7 AP Biology students, accompanied by Ms. Richardson and Mr. Czyzowski, traveled to Harvard University as part of the Amgen Biotech Experience and Life Science Outreach to complete a personalized genetics laboratory, PTC Polymerase Chain Reaction Lab - Using a Single-Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) to Predict Bitter-Tasting Ability.

First, they had to extract their DNA from their cheek cells to get the PCR process started. While PCR was doing its job, we discussed the ability to taste certain bitter foods. Do you like the taste of brussel sprouts? Broccoli? Cilantro? Genetic differences in taste and smell affect our food preferences and food intake. The ability to taste these bitter foods, and all other foods, depends on your genes! Phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) is a bitter tasting compound used in science labs to determine an individual's bitter tasting ability. In AP Biology, we have 2 non-tasters, 2 weak tasters, and 3 strong tasters for PTC.

Students were able to practice their micropipette skills as well as see the technology they will use in a college science lab. They learned about the use of restriction enzymes to splice DNA to test for certain genes. And, finally, they loaded their DNA into a gel to run gel electrophoresis in order to see what alleles they have for the PTC gene. What a phenomenal learning experience!

Austin 17House Fundraiser
Check Out This Great April 1 Event

On Sunday, 1 April, Austin 17 House in Brentwood, NH will host a delicious Pancake Breakfast in support of a project to renovate a dance room for area youth. This Eagle Scout project is being led by Parker Stead, a Life Scout of Boy Scout Troop 185. Parker's Eagle Scout dance room renovation project will help Austin 17 House, a non-profit child and teen organization in Brentwood, NH that works to build an atmosphere of fun and self-acceptance, for the purpose of creating stronger community through collaboration, stronger leaders through mentorship and stronger families through education and support.

Parker is working diligently to renovate a dance room for the children and teens of Austin 17 House to give them extra opportunities to learn more about the benefits of dance, fitness, flexibility, and working together to reach a final goal. According to Parker, "I believe giving Austin 17 House the ability to introduce new programs into their organization will attract more kids that Austin 17 House has already graciously given to so many other teens. I could have done any other Eagle Project I wanted but realizing what Austin 17 House is doing for the community gave me a sense of a mission to help them in any way I can. I've been dedicating all of my time recently to complete this project, but every project comes at a price."

To raise the $850.00 price tag for this project, Parker and Austin 17 House will be co-hosting a Pancake Breakfast on April 1st, 2018 from 8-11 AM. The menu will include p ancakes, bacon, coffee, juice, and fruit. Austin 17 House is located at 263 Route 125 in Brentwood, NH (across from Bessie's Lunch). Parker hopes all readers will be able to make it to the Pancake Breakfast to support his Eagle Scout project, but mostly, support Austin 17 House and all of the many wonderful things they do for the community. If you are interested in learning more about my project, or have any questions, you can find me at the Austin 17 House Open House on Sunday, March 18th 2018 from 4:00PM-7:00PM.
