John Levering & Wes Yamaka
Sunday, August 13, 2017, 7:30pm

Do you love to be surrounded by beauty, creativity, art, history, and interesting people all from your own community?

John Levering and Wes Yamaka, popular Columbia artists in the 1970s, turned to art after other careers, personifying Columbia's goal to be a place for people to grow.

They opened Columbia's first art gallery and studio called, "Eye of the Camel" in the 1970s. The Art Gala will feature works by both artists from the collections of Harper's Choice residents and will kickoff with a champagne reception and hors d'oeuvres. It will be held at Kahler Hall, one of Howard County's most popular venues. To loan art for the event, contact Steve Ingley by July 15th @ 410-730-0770 or [email protected]. Drawing Connections Workshop - John Levering, Wes Yamaka and Columbia

Wednesday, August 9, 2017, 7:00pm
Kahler Hall
5440 Old Tucker Row, Columbia, MD 21044

Appreciation for art and the role it can play in creating community was embraced by Columbia's developers.  Jim Rouse said, "We have two main opportunities with regard to the arts. First is to present art so that it can be seen and heard and felt in places that are beyond the walls of the museum; to bring art to the marketplace, to the community . . . . and second to provide a platform in public places where budding artists can perform, stretch, grow. . ."

It is in this climate that Wes Yamaka and John Levering flourished.  The program by Barbara Kellner, Director of Columbia Archives, will focus on the different career paths that led Levering and Yamaka to become friends, artists, and entrepreneurs, their contributions to the community, and their lasting legacy.  Clips of video interviews with Wes Yamaka and Jimmy Rouse on his father's connection to Levering will be highlighted.

For more information about the event, call Melanie Jeffers at 410-730-0770 or email [email protected]. To register to attend this free event, click here.

Howard County Autism Society Announces 11th Annual Autism Walk & 5K Run

Proceeds Will Support Programs & Services for Howard County Families Living With Autism

The Howard County Autism Society (HCAS), a trusted resource to hundreds of individuals and families living with autism in Howard County, MD and the surrounding area, will hold its 11th Annual One Step Closer Walk and 5K Run on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at Centennial Park in Ellicott City, MD. Proceeds from the event will support HCAS' programs and services for individuals on the autism spectrum, their families and the local community.

This annual event brings together those touched by the autism spectrum disorder in a supportive, energizing and fun environment. HCAS provides a place where the local community can benefit from families' collective experience and expertise, helping others navigate the path they themselves have traveled on this journey. All proceeds from the event stay in Howard County and directly impact the lives of children and adults with autism.

The event will feature a timed 5K run around Centennial Lake, a "Lake Walk" of the same distance, and a shorter three-quarter mile "Piece of Cake Walk." We have runners and walkers who participate individually as well as in teams to harness their fundraising power and make this a spirited, hands-on experience! There will be children's activities, including face painting, Star Wars costumed performers, a moon bounce and other inflatable games. The event also features a variety of exhibitor tables for local businesses, organizations and health & human service agencies. Microbusiness owned and operated by those on the autism spectrum will again be highlighted.

Online registration is available at www.howard-autism.kintera.org/onestepcloser2017 through October 4th. Race day registration is available on-site.

Event timeline is as follows:

LET'S TALK TREES

English Ivy, Invasive Killer? English Ivy is an invasive plant species, not native to Maryland and has no natural predators or pests. Allowed to grow unchecked, English Ivy suppresses and eliminates other plants and forms a dense monoculture groundcover, unsuitable for most wildlife except possibly rodents, snakes and mosquitos.

English Ivy presents a danger to the health of our trees. From the added weight on the tree and limbs, to a risk of suffocation and nutrient loss, ivy can compromise the health of the trees on your lot. We require property owners to remove ivy from all trees on their property and create a "lifesaving ring" without ivy at least 12" around the trunk of the tree. Watch this video to get helpful tips remove ivy from your trees.
