Greetings!
Last week I mentioned Caltrans’ upcoming project to repave all of Hwy 1 in Pacifica. This week, I’d like to mention a couple Pacifica city street paving projects upcoming. Although City funding for paving projects is very limited, the City has received grant funding to repave Linda Mar Boulevard from Adobe Drive to Alicante Drive, and Oceana Boulevard from Milagra Drive to Monterey Road. These projects are expected to be completed by next spring, 2019.
Many of you have also been asking about the adaptive traffic control system cameras at the intersections of Reina Del Mar/Hwy 1 and Fassler/Hwy 1. That system will be on and functioning beginning next week, probably Tuesday, March 27. The installation of cameras, replacement of Caltrans’ control boxes, installation of communications hardware, and initial data-gathering and adjustments took a while, but are almost complete. This system is not expected to solve traffic problems, but is intended to improve wait times, and can be adapted/adjusted over time depending on results it is measuring.
Finally, regarding the Sea Level Rise/Local Coastal Plan Update project underway, the City Council will be deciding on Monday night, 3/26, at the City Council meeting about expanding the stakeholder engagement budget and process, as well as clarifying the goals of the project. - SF Rec & Parks to Improve Coastal Trails at Sharp Park - The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department started its annual maintenance of the Coastal Trail located on the berm west of the Sharp Park Golf Course on Monday, March 19th. Depending on weather, the duration of the maintenance efforts will take approximately two weeks to complete and is expected to occur between 7AM and 4PM Monday through Friday. During construction, recreational use of the trail may be temporarily interrupted to ensure park user safety. Read more here.
- City Council to Consider Amending Social Host Ordinance to Include Marijuana, Controlled Substances - Pacifica has long had an ordinance in place that allows officers to issue administrative citations to persons hosting loud and unruly gatherings, after issuing a written warning to the violator. A second response would result in an administrative citation. In 2011, the City Council adopted an amendment to the ordinance that allowed officers to issue administrative citations of $1000 for a first offense to anyone hosting a gathering where minors are possessing, consuming, or being served alcoholic beverages. No written warning is needed prior to the issuance of a citation. With the legalization of recreational cannabis, it is anticipated that its access by youth will increase. This, coupled with the increase in the abuse of controlled substances by minors, more commonly prescription medication stolen from friends and family members, an amendment to the social host ordinance will be presented to the City Council on Monday, March 26 for adoption (see the Agenda Staff Report for more information). This amendment will allow officers to administratively cite those responsible for a gathering where minors are present and are consuming alcoholic beverages, cannabis products, or controlled substances. The exception to this ordinance will be those in possession of cannabis or controlled substances legally per a physician’s prescription.
- Bike Lane Installation Coming to Palmetto Streetscape Phase 1 - Phase 1 of the Palmetto Streetscape Project is nearly complete, and the City appreciates your patience during construction. The final component of this phase will require some parking and driveway access restrictions for the installation and curing of green pavement markings for bike lanes. We urge residents and visitors to the Palmetto area to heed the signs, cones and barricades indicating access restrictions. See the Information Sheet for more information.
- Paving Project on Highway 1 to Begin April 2018 - Caltrans has awarded a contract to Granite Rock to pave a ten-mile stretch of Highway 1 between Gray Whale Cove and the Highway 1/Route 35 Interchange. Most of the project falls within the Pacifica city limits. Work is scheduled to begin in April 2018 on a five-day work week, excluding holidays, and is expected to be complete by the end of October 2018. Most work will be performed at night to minimize impacts on the traveling public. See the CalTrans News Release for more information.
- Pacifica Youth Advisory Board (YAB) Now Accepting Applications for 2018/2019 School Year - The Pacifica Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is made up of volunteer High School students that want to make a difference in our community. They are a dedicated group of young leaders who will plan special events and also participate in Parks, Beaches & Recreation events and activities. Spring Egg Hunt – Find the Golden Egg!
City of Pacifica Parks, Beaches and Recreation Department hosts its annual Spring Egg Hunts for ages 1 – 10 at two locations. Free family fun with egg hunts, jelly bean contest and a special appearance by the Easter Bunny. This is a free event, no registration required.
