Meet Ingrid Palmer
Author of  All Out of Pretty  (on shelves now)

1. What inspires you to write books for teens and young adult readers?
I write young adult books primarily because it's the genre I most enjoy reading. When you're a teenager, everything happens in high definition. You're figuring out who you are, what you believe, when to trust. It can be scary, but teens are resilient, open to new ideas, and wicked smart. They tell it like it is, and I love that. And I love telling their stories, which are usually full of universal truths and experiences that anyone, of any age, can relate to.

2. What do you hope your readers will take from All Out of Pretty?
When I write, my goal is to tell my character's story as authentically as I can. I don't have any preconceived ideas about what readers should take from it or what they should think about the issues that are raised. My hope is simply that the book will make them  feel  something Invoking emotions is why I read, and why I write.
3. From reading your website, you seem to be pretty outdoorsy. Does this inspire your writing in any way?
I love the outdoors! And yes, taking a hike or going for a run is definitely one of the ways that I work through stress and often work out plot/story issues. The book I'm writing now is actually set in the small mountain town in which I live, so that's been fun. But no matter what I'm writing about, being out in nature definitely fills up my well of creativity.

4. The protagonist in All Out of Pretty, Andrea, was a side character in a book you started writing at 13. What made you want to go back to Andrea and write a whole book about her?
It was actually my critique group's idea. When I decided to focus on fiction after years of working as a journalist, I pulled out that old manuscript and started revising it. My critique partners read it and mentioned how compelling Andrea's character was, and suggested that I write  her  story one day. I let that idea percolate for a couple of years and then, while I was working on a different project, Andrea's voice just broke through in an extremely powerful way. I wrote the first chapter of All Out of Pretty , and then kept writing. Her story was so fierce and plaintive; it wasn't going to let me go.

5. What are you reading now?
Right now, I'm reading an ARC of The Accidental Bad Girl by Maxine Kaplan (coming out in May) and listening to the audiobook of Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley. Loving them both!

6. What is your favorite word?
"Dollop," I think. Or "sauté." "Salty" is fun, too. And "kismet." I also really like "gritty," which describes the type of books I write and is also one of my nicknames. There are way too many cool words out there to choose just one!
YA Authors Rachel Hartman, N. K. Traver, and Colleen Oakes Hold Panel at Tattered Cover
By Kiana M., Tattered Cover Teen Advisory Board member
On Wednesday, March 14, YA authors  Rachel Hartman N. K. Traver , and  Colleen Oakes  participated in a YA author panel at Tattered Cover’s Aspen Grove location.

In  Tess of The Road , Hartman’s latest release, stubborn troublemaker Tess changes her identity and embarks on a journey away from home as her tumultuous past threatens to catch up with her. A fantasy novel set in a medieval world known as the Southlands, it exists as a spin-off to Hartman’s first novel,  Seraphina .

“I wanted to explore the sister relationship and the roadmap back to yourself,” Hartman said. “I asked myself: How can a person break out of labels and pave their own way?”

Traver’s  Duplicity , a cyber-thriller where the reflection in the mirror comes alive and threatens to take over, tackles similar conflicts with identity. It follows computer-hacking teen, Brandon, as he confronts the carefully-built image that threatens to shatter from both the kind girl trying to save him and the mirror trying to change him.
In the  Queen of Hearts  series, Oakes reimagines the origin story of the Queen of Hearts, exploring the twisted darkness that a repeatedly broken heart can breed during times of extreme chaos and war.

“Usually, there are a number of things that move together into a melting pot of an idea,” Oakes said on her inspiration for the series. “You have to mine the [original] story for what lives underneath the current.”

At the panel, the three women covered a wide range of topics: their weirdest experiences as authors, the art of being a ‘pantser’- someone who both plots and pants their way through stories, and how to juggle the demands of motherhood with writing.

“I’m at the mercy of my story,” said Oakes, “Like a river current, I can feel it when it pulls me away from the outline.”

“Over the years, I’ve learned how to pack the most into my writing time,” Traver said. “When you connect with your book, it spins out of you.”

The panel delved into the delicacies and idiosyncrasies of the craft, and it was incredibly insightful. Readers and writers alike should consider attending one of the many similar YA events Tattered Cover offers in the future.

When asked on what advice she had for young writers, Hartman recounted this: “Be patient, be persistent, and be gentle with yourself,” She said, continuing, “The world will tell you ‘no’ over and and over again, and you’ll have to punch up.”

by Siobhan Vivian

" Stay Sweet  is about two very important things: the friendship between girls and ice cream. Siobhan Vivian's ( New York Times  bestselling author of  The List ) new book is a delicious summer (or winter, when you're missing the sun) read. The book follows Amelia during her final summer before college. For the last four summers, Amelia has worked at Meade Creamery along with nine other girls. The traditions the girls create and the bonds they form are reasons so many girls covet a position working at the ice cream shop. On Amelia's last first day, she finds the owner, Molly, on the floor of the office. Through the next weeks, Amelia struggles to keep the shop afloat with the help of her best friend, Cate, and the boy who is now in charge. The book has a parallel plot line taking place during WWII, highlighting the founding of Meade Creamery. If you like books about strong friendships and coming of age with a sprinkling of romance and history, this book is for you. Just make sure you have some of your favorite ice cream nearby!" --  Vivian, Tattered Cover Teen Advisory Board member

" More Than We Can Tell is about Cam who, with the love of his adopted family, has recovered from his abusive, religious father and Emma who feels that neither of her always-fighting parents can understand her. They meet and fall for each other but both still have secrets and soon, one will be fighting for his/her life. While this is a very character-driven novel, the plot will keep you turning pages. Read if you like Nicola Yoon or Chris Crutcher. -- Toni, High School Librarian in Littleton, CO
by Mary H.K. Choi

"While  Emergency Contact 's romance is far from a meet-cute instalove, it is a cute and fun realistic romance book. Penny and Sam are adorable in their mutual awkwardness anytime they meet IRL. Because they don't have to see each other, it is much easier to talk about anxieties, worries and dreams when simply texting. But will this go beyond friendship? Do either of them want it to? Penny's relationship with her mother is also a great part of this book. Give to fans of Rainbow Rowell or Jenny Han. -- Toni, High School Librarian in Littleton, CO

Write a
Book Review!

Have you ever walked through a bookstore and seen little cards sticking out of shelves with book reviews? Have those reviews ever made you want to buy a book?

Those cards are called shelf talkers, and we're looking for teens to write shelf talkers for their favorite books. Your friends and family -- and a lot of total strangers -- can see your reviews on the shelves at Tattered Cover. How cool is that?

To write reviews, send an email to  Kristen Gilligan with "Teen Book Review" in the subject line.
Teen Writing

Meets that last Sunday of each month. This is free and open exclusively to teens. Email  Kristen to RSVP.
Teen Advisory Board

This is a group of book-loving teens who meet every month or so to plan and produce programming for anyone excited about YA literature.

Board members have the opportunity to use their creativity, social media skills, and enthusiasm for books to help with all aspects of event promotion, planning, and execution; introduce (and hang out with) authors at events; write book blurbs; give book talks; get FREE advanced reading copies; and even help select authors who come to the store for events or visit schools.

It's fun, rewarding, and a great resumé builder. Currently, we meet at our Aspen Grove and now our Colfax locations. For more info, read our  TAB Info & Application . To sign up for the TAB, email  Kristen Gilligan . (And tell your bookish friends!)

Host an Author for Free at Your School!

I mean, who doesn't love a school assembly? Seriously though, Tattered Cover can bring an author into your school to speak to smaller groups of English or writing classes, or a full school-wide assembly.

The best part is that's there no cost to the school. If this sounds interesting, just connect us with your school librarian or principal.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Lifel1k3 by Jay Kristoff (on shelves 5/29).

On an island junkyard beneath a sky that glows with radiation, a deadly secret lies buried in the scrap. Seventeen-year-old Eve isn't looking for trouble--she's too busy looking over her shoulder. The robot gladiator she spent months building has been reduced to a smoking wreck, she's on the local gangster's wanted list, and the only thing keeping her grandpa alive is the money she just lost to the bookies.

Worst of all, she's discovered she can somehow destroy machines with the power of her mind, and a bunch of puritanical fanatics are building a coffin her size because of it. If she's ever had a worse day, Eve can't remember it. The problem is, Eve  has  had a worse day--one that lingers in her nightmares and the cybernetic implant where her memories used to be. Her discovery of a handsome android named Ezekiel--called a "Lifelike" because they resemble humans--will bring her world crashing down and make her question whether her entire life is a lie.

With her best friend Lemon Fresh and her robotic sidekick Cricket in tow, Eve will trek across deserts of glass, battle unkillable bots, and infiltrate towering megacities to save the ones she loves...and learn the truth about the bloody secrets of her past.
