Dear Colleagues:

There are signs everywhere that spring has arrived at last. The days are getting longer. The temperatures are on the rise. Birds are chirping in the early mornings. And flowers are coming up all over the place. For me, this is the most uplifting season of the year. It's a time when there's so much that is new, a time that energizes everything.

This is also a time of year that ushers in something very special and important to me and many others in the college. I like to refer to it as our season of graduations. All together, we have eight separate graduation events that are spread over four months. The largest one, our Convocation Ceremony, is for our dental hygiene and dental classes - a total of nearly 150 students and about 1,000 guests who also attend. Our other graduation events are held for the specialty residents and their families and friends. Although much smaller in scope, those celebrations are held with just as much pride and enthusiasm.

Of the many things I enjoy as dean, none is more fulfilling than attending these events and contributing to them. Because of the sizes and unique identities of each group, nearly every aspect of their graduation ceremonies is distinctive. The places where they are held, the people who are part of the program, and the emotions that are revealed create special memories that will last for years to come.

I particularly enjoy hearing our graduates talk about their time in our college. They often speak about all that has been done for them, how grateful they are for their many experiences here, and the memories they will hold onto as they move into the next chapter of their lives. I am always glad to learn about the friendships they have made, many of which will last throughout their lives. All these things are a great tribute to the years these students have spent in Postle Hall.

When this year's season of graduations passes, we will have awarded degrees and certificates to more than 180 students or residents. I am excited to think of the many different places they will go to share all they have learned at our college. What a great way to move into the springtime of the year!
