HELPING SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE START BUSINESSES
While starting a business comes with certain risks-according to the Small Business Administration two-thirds of businesses with employees will fold within their first two years-it can also be an empowering experience that may further economic independence for women and their families. Many survivors of domestic violence have and will continue to seek business ownership as a means to support themselves and rebuild their lives. What can data tell us about women's entrepreneurship and how can advocates empower survivors to pursue this path safely and successfully?

MANAGEMENT CORNER
POLITICAL TENSION IS MAKING IT HARD FOR PEOPLE TO FOCUS ON WORK
This article focuses on political tension felt in the workplace, and the negative effect it has on employees. The results of a recent study suggest that 10% of employees report feelings of stress, cynicism, difficulty focusing, and decreased productivity. Another study suggests that 87% of employees admit to reading political posts on social media during the workday, and 50% report seeing political discussions turn into arguments. In addition, 29% of employees have reported decreased productivity since the election. There is growing concern that the charged political atmosphere could lead to increased incivility, which may increase turnover and diminished trust between coworkers. Organizations are still learning to manage this problem, and the article recommends trying to find the right balance between employee voices and maintaining civility. ARE YOUR JOB SEEKERS OVER
THINKING OR UNDER THINKING INTERVIEWS?
Some people over think job interviews. They nitpick things to a point that will keep them awake at night. They think to themselves, "I didn't get that job I wanted because of all these things I did wrong. I'm just the worst." There are also people that do not pay enough attention to various parts of the job search. To help people avoid learning some of these lessons the hard way, here are a few moments people tend to overanalyze, plus a few other moments some people really don't think about nearly enough.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF CHANCE IN THE CAREER PROCESS?
We often make it sound like people end up careers because of some well planned and laid out process, but this is not a universal truth. Many people end in up careers by chance. The vast majority of people reading this newsletter did not end up in workforce development as the result of a well crafted career plan. There is a high degree of probability that chance played an important role in you ending up in workforce development. But, you probably do not discuss this aspect of your own career development with the job seekers you serve. This article speaks to the role chance has in career development.
