FAR-Funded Surgery Boosts Teen's Self-Confidence and Vision

Eye surgery has definitely changed 16-year-old Mariam Mkrtchyan's life in many ways, not least of which is her improved self-confidence. Mariam underwent surgery for strabismus, or crossed eyes, in April. She had developed crossed eyes after a bad fall at age two. Since the family had no means to pay for corrective surgery, she dealt with her condition until she was accepted into FAR's Child Poverty Reduction Program, which the costs. Her mother is very happy that Mariam was accepted into FAR's program. "Raising four children is not easy. I would never be able to make $500 to pay for the surgery. I am very thankful to the donors who helped us," she said.  LINK

Holy Fathers Saints Athanasius and Cyril of Alexandria and Gregory of Theologian

On July 28 Armenian Church commemorates the feast of the Holy Fathers Sts. Athanesius and Cyril of Alexandria and Gregory of Theologian.
St. Athanasius, Egyptian by birth, was born in Alexandria to pious parents who dedicated their son from an early age to serve the Lord. Growing up, Athanasius became so successful in learning and virtuous life that Alexander - bishop of Alexandria appointed him as his reader, and then ordained him to the diaconate. In 325 young Athanasius accompanied Alexander to the Ecumenical Council of Nicaea, where Athanasius, along with pastors and fathers of the Church, defended Orthodox doctrine against Arianism. After the death of Bishop Alexander Athanasius was popularly elected as his successor. Throughout his life, undergoing sorrows and hardships, pursued by enemies of the Church, Athanasius, a true soldier of Christ, meekly bore his cross, was constantly strengthened and enlightened by Holy Spirit. Athanasius - author of many theological works, is considered one of the pillars of the universal Church.
Cyril of Alexandria was the Patriarch of Alexandria from 412 to 444. Little is known for certain of Cyril's early life. He was born c. 376, in the small town of Theodosios, Egypt. A few years after his birth, his maternal uncle Theophilus rose to the powerful position of Patriarch of Alexandria. His mother remained close to her brother and under his guidance, Cyril was well educated. His writings show his knowledge of Christian writers of his day, including Eusebius, Origen, Didymus the Blind, and writers of the Church of Alexandria. He received the formal Christian education standard for his day: he studied grammar from age twelve to fourteen (390-392), rhetoric and humanities from fifteen to twenty (393-397) and finally theology and biblical studies (398-402). In 403 he accompanied his uncle to attend a synod in Constantinople. Cyril wrote extensively and was a leading protagonist in the Christological controversies of the late-4th and 5th centuries. He was a central figure in the Council of Ephesus in 431, which led to the deposition of Nestorius as Patriarch of Constantinople.
St. Gregory the Theologian, this great ecumenical doctor of the Church is also known as Gregory Nazianzen, after the town of his birth. The saint was born through the prayers of his mother, who relentlessly prayed for a son. Being inquisitive by nature, Gregory first studied at Caesarea, then in Palestine, Alexandria and finally in Athens, becoming philosopher and rhetorician. In Athens he studied with St. Basil the Great. The two friends had natural tendency to asceticism, delighting the locals with their monastic feats. At the age of thirty Gregory returned to his homeland, was baptized and made a vow of celibacy. Studying the Scripture day and night, he received the gift of clear contemplation of Christ. Consecrated in 361 by his father in priesthood, he became head of Nazianzen Church, and twenty years later - the bishop of Constantinople. For twelve years the saint taught the people in Orthodox faith and fought against heretics. He participated in the Second Ecumenical Council of Constantinople (381). Literary heritage of St. Gregory includes numerous sermons and letters.

FAR's GTech Enables a Career Change

For Sona Israyelyan, it used to be all about the music. For six years, until 2010, Sona ran the orchestra at Fund for Armenian Relief's Octet Music School in Gyumri, coaching children who were dedicated to pursuing a music-focused education.

Sona was a key player in fundraising efforts to rebuild the school: which was still reeling from the impact of the 1988 earthquake decades later. A major renovation made possible by several donors-including the Mardigian family from Michigan, and the collective efforts of Ian Gillan and Tony Iommi of the rock group Deep Purple-was completed in 2013.

Yet despite her life-long passion for music, Sona eventually longed for a change. She was eager to branch out and explore the fascinating terrain of IT, a primarily male-dominated field.

While working at Octet, Sona enrolled in a web programming course at the Fund for Armenian Relief's Gyumri Information Technology Center (GTech), and eventually earned her certification as a software and web developer. Today, Sona leads a team of four men at the website development firm AVROMIC.

  BIBLE READING
13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven-the Son of Man.14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him."
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
(John 3:13-21)
