Spotlight on our Schools - Riverview

January has been a very eventful month at Riverview! Our students continue to show academic progress as they are delving even deeper into the curriculum.  Writing celebrations have been occurring throughout the grade levels as students are learning about the different genres  and using the appropriate structure and strategies to improve the quality of their writing.  In reading, many grade levels have immersed themselves into non-fiction text and preparing to share what they learned with others as they become experts on different topics. In Math our students are learning different strategies that focus on having them gain concrete understanding of the concepts rather than just procedural.  They are offered opportunities to explore math concepts using visuals and manipulatives in order to understand the processes involved.  Thank you to the parents that have volunteered to demonstrate real life applications of math to our students. Our students are continuing to use higher-order thinking skills and are involved in "hands on" learning in Science, Math, STEM lab and throughout the day.  It's an exciting time of year as students are taught new concepts and strengthen their foundational skills.

We also continue to focus on Riverview ROCKET behavior as our students form connections and are taught explicitly about social emotional learning in morning meetings and throughout the day.  Our third grade students did an amazing job teaching the whole school about C ompassion during our student-led assembly.  Our Kindergarten is preparing to teach the school about  Kindness.  During February, we celebrate friendships and being a friend to others. Our students will be involved in  Jump Rope for Heart, a fun physical activity program for schools aimed at keeping kids healthy while raising funds to fight heart disease.

The annual National Geographic Geography Bee was a great success, thank you to all that assisted.  The fourth and fifth grade students demonstrated persistence as they answered challenging geography questions. We are proud of all our contestants.  We congratulate the winners: in first place Kevin Harris and second place Max Beck.

A reminder that student report cards for the second semester will be available on Genesis parent portal on February 7.  They will provide valuable feedback on students' progress. There will be a minimum day on Friday, February 14 and a professional development day for our staff.
Thank you to our entire learning community for your support, we are looking forward to another great month ahead.  Upcoming events include Friendship parties on February 14, launching Jump Rope for Heart on February 12 and Read Across America Day on March 2.
