A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

Parashat Va'tchanan contains the second recitation of the Ten Commandments. It also is the Torah portion that gives us the first paragraph of the Shema, which includes the provision that we should Love God with all our heart, Soul, and might. The Commandments provide us with black and white rules to live by. The Shema, poetically, urges us to recognize the one, true, God and make sure that we make our God and God's ethical rules a part of our lives and the lives of our descendants.

It should be simple and, yet, we seem incapable of doing these things. We should understand on a very basic level, that it is not enough for us to study and understand the Torah and its rules. Rather, what really matters is how we act on them. Our tradition does not want us to merely "know", or "feel" Torah. It desperately wants us to "do" Torah.

There are many ways to actively participate in our tradition. Learn, come to services, repair the world, do good deeds. Each of us does not have to do everything, but we should strive to do something. As we are told in Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers): "You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it (2:21).

Over the next few weeks, we have many options for you to "do".

1)  Come to Services this coming Friday evening, July 27th, at 8:00 PM for a special service honoring Judith and Don Pripstein. Don and Judith's contributions to are too many to list fully here, however, if you look at our library you will see Judith's handiwork as the JCC librarian. If you look at our High Holy Day Torah covers, the wimples that tie our Torahs, and other places in the JCC, you will see Judith's needlepoint beautifying the building. In addition to being a fixture on the JCC board and serving as President for 8 years, Don leads services and is always working quietly behind the scenes to make sure that things run smoothly. Join us to honor this irreplaceable couple.

2)  Join us on Sunday morning, July 29th at 10:00 am for a presentation by Richard Pat Morgan of Richard's poetry and Pat's watercolors from their new book: "My Lighthouse Key." If you have not joined us previously for Richard's loving presentation of his work, please be certain to join us this time. His poetry is partly personal, sometimes humorous, and always accessible. This is a lovely way to spend a Sunday morning. Coffee and nosh will be provided.

3)  Join us for the Shabbat of August 3rd and 4th for our Scholars Near the Beach Series. When second-year JTS rabbinical student Jessica Dell'Era joins us. Jessica, who hails from the San Francisco Bay Area, holds a B.A. in Dramaturgy from Pomona College and an M.A. in Education from University of California Berkeley.  She has taught in numerous settings, including Spanish, persuasive writing, and T'fillah.  In her free time, Jessica enjoys reading, cooking, salsa dancing, hiking, and cycling. On "Friday evening Jessica will give a d'var entitled:  "Heel! Parashat Eikev as God's Leash." At a lunch and learn on Saturday she will pose the following question: "Is it only nowadays that we ask our rabbis to clarify and reinterpret laws that no longer suit our society?  Nope!  We will discover that the Torah itself gives us tools for making Jewish law adaptable, as it has always been."

4)  On Saturday, August 11th, Alan D. Jay, Executive Director of the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA), will join us for a lunch and learn to discuss in detail "Confronting BDS from College to Congress". The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement (BDS), constantly applying pressure on municipalities and college campuses to boycott and harm Israel.   Mr. Jay's discussion will focus on what we can do to help our selves, our children, and our politicians to battle against this harmful movement.

5)  On Saturday evening, August 18th, the JCC will have its annual Coffee House featuring the music of Dr. Carl Steinberg.   Come to hear Carl sing songs by the Beatles, Don Mclean, the Beach Boys, the Animals, Credence Clearwater Revival, some original songs, and more. Havdallah is at 8:45 followed at 9:00 by the Coffee House.

Here are just five different ways that the JCC is providing for you to "do" Torah over the course of the next few weeks. Don't forget that we also have weekly Shabbat services, morning services, Torah study and other classes.

If there is anything else that you would like to see, or learn, please always feel free to reach out to me.

Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

T
RAVEL TO ISRAEL WITH THE JCC

The JCC trip to Israel will take place October 7-18, 2018. The itinerary will take us from Tel Aviv to the Golan Heights, to a winery, to the Kineret, to a Kibbutz, to Sefad, to Jerusalem, to the Dead Sea, to Massada, to many museums, and more. At Massada we will be sharing in a bar mitzvah of one of our fellow travelers. What joy!
The JCC's first trip to Israel will take place October 7-18, 2018. The itinerary will take us from Tel Aviv to the Golan Heights, to a winery, to the Kineret, to a Kibbutz, to Sefad, to Jerusalem, to the Dead Sea, to Masada, to many museums, and more. At Masada we will be sharing in a bat mitzvah of one of our fellow travelers.

We will be immersed in Israeli history and culture and, at the same time, we will get to better know our selves, and each other.

So far an extraordinarily nice group of people have chosen to travel with us.

This trip that has been designed both for the person who has never been to Israel, and for the person who has visited frequently.  Come be a part of what is sure to be a trip of a lifetime.

In addition to a set itinerary, we will have some evenings where we will be free to explore on our own.  We will be provided with information on concerts or cultural events in the places where we
will be.

The tour is officially flying El Al; however, if you want to fly United, ITC can help you to make arrangements.

To view a full itinerary and to download an on-line application, go to  ISRAEL TOUR.

THE WEEK THAT WAS...

Nearly 100 worshippers enjoyed a beautiful evening on the 24th Street beach for our second Kabbalat  Shabbat on the Beach this summer. All in attendance received a Shabbat goodie bag with candles, wine, a goblet, two challah rolls, the blessings and information about JCC activities.  The last Shabbat on the Beach of this summer will be held on Friday August 17th in Loveladies at 6 PM and will include musical accompaniment by Rick Abrams.

Thank you to JoAnn Ramer and Oded Cohen for hosting a  Parlor Learning Session with Rabbi Jay at their home in Mirage.  Anyone who would like to have Rabbi set up something similar in their community, please contact him at

Thank you to all those who had breakfast or lunch at the Classic Cafe on Thursday the 26th.  A return on each check of 20% was donated to the JCC and we thank the management of the Classic for their generosity.  Pictured above are  Dining to Donate chairs JoAnn Ramer and Helen Gross along with friends from their Mirage Community.  The next Dining to Donate opportunity at the Classic Cafe in Manahawkin is August 14th.

A most informative presentation by the  Jewish National Fund on the way that Israel conserves and develops water supplies was held to a full house at the home of Rita & Howard Miller in Loveladies.  Thank you to the Millers for opening their home so that we could learn about this important issue. In particular, JNF speaker Barbara Israel Bortniker shared the need for firefighting equipment in Israel as the rockets that land in Israel are not only a danger to the population but the fires they cause have destroyed critical crops and livestock in the area.

POETRY READING WITH RICHARD AND PAT MORGAN
Sunday, July 29 @ 10 AM
Refreshments will be served

SISTERS FIRST
by Richard Morgan

Dad told us, more than once, "You are sisters first,
from the same source, same surf, same beach, tide and ebb.

The gravitational pull of your commonality binds you together,
just as your similarities repel." Dad was a science teacher.

"Your friction comes from your closeness.
You chafe and make fire. Even sisters need some separation."

Dad wanted us to believe sisters were created on the first day
just like heaven and earth, even before Adam and Eve.

He told us, "When you were young, sleeping in the same room,
your dreams jumped from one to the other and back.

So now, when you get jealous, and you will get jealous,
look in the mirror and say, 'I am enough. May God bless my sister.'

With all of life's unevenness, over time,
you will bless each other.

Sisters first."
