New Jersey Coach Connect
April 2018

From the ICF-NJ President

Greetings from Vancouver, BC!

I just returned from three days at the ICF Global Leaders' Forum (GLF) in Vancouver, British Columbia, where I had the opportunity to represent ICF-NJ. While there, I got to meet and network with approximately 150 other ICF global leaders from 137 countries and states.

It was an awe-inspiring experience for me to be among such valued leaders and coaches from around the world to address important operational and strategic aspects of our organization.

GLF aims to equip its attendees to successfully lead our organizations by providing us with information, training, and exposure to best practices.

I'd like to share some key learnings, highlights, and thoughts that I believe will be of the greatest value and interest to you.

ICF Global has three strategic focus areas for 2018:

1. ICF Members represent excellence in professional coaching.

ICF delivers world class credentialing programs.

2. ICF is the most relevant professional coaching organization.

We build thriving global, regional, and local communities.

3. Expand the scope and influence of the organization.

Continue to lead an evolving profession:

  • Establish thought leadership through a Thought Leadership Institute.

  • Create offerings for organizations building coaching cultures.

  • Separating credentialing and program accreditation functions
The Conference featured a panel discussion with the Global Board of Directors, as well as several breakout sessions on such important topics as Finance, Membership, Credentialing, and Leadership.

Global Directors' Panel
: Each Director was asked what they felt was the most important thing they bring to their leadership role. As we are all leaders, whether of our own business, our families, or the boards or committees on which we may sit, I thought you would find their answers intriguing!
  • Energy
  • Power for You: Believe in the work, and in its impact
  • Bring A Service Mind: Remember whom we serve and why. There is no team leader, because every team member serves the other, and the team needs to bring their best.
  • Listening, Loving, and Asking for Help: Let the task be the master, connect with passion, and ask questions
  • Trust that your intention is right
  • Belief and Possibility: It's not always easy, but tap into your calm
  • Balance Between Troublemaker and Peacemaker: Don't be satisfied with the status quo
  • Authenticity: Tell your story of who you are
Finance:
  • ICF-NJ is in a secure financial situation for our chapter's sustainability.

  • There is an opportunity to partner more with our member coaches to find pro bono and paid coaching opportunities, sponsorships, etc., for the organization and its members. (If you have any ideas in these areas, please reach out!)
Credentialing:
  • 21,000 individuals are holders of three ICF credentials: ACC (12,164), PCC (8,017), MCC (820).

  • There were more than 500 credentialing applications last year.

  • Last month, there were more than 4,300 requests for information or assistance, and more than 130 hours of live chat/phone calls.

  • Any changes to credentialing requirements will be announced each February.
Membership:
Our members identify with the ICF.
  • The ICF brand has been identified as having credibility, quality, experience, and engagement.

  • As a local organization we want to create a unique member experience for you, by getting to know you, and involving and integrating you further into our organization.
So please share with me or anyone on the Board something you would like to do or see in our organization!

Leadership:
  • We are all leaders: Whether in our businesses, in our families, on our boards, in our life!

  • Leadership is a journey.

  • Less is more: Prioritize, and pace yourself.
And here's a special note for 2019!

Converge 19, the ICF Global Conference, will take place in Prague from October 24-26, 2019. So please mark your calendar!

My biggest takeaway by far after these three days is how grateful I am to be a part of this wonderful organization. My wish for every member of ICF-NJ is that we continue to engage as a community of coaches where we learn, grow and share together.

With much gratitude for each of you,

Andrea Harvey

Conflict is an age-old problem, and Kit Tankhiwale (Aikido Instructor and Coach) has found great success managing conflicts using the key principles of the martial art known as Aikido.

Also called "The Art of Peace," the fundamental belief of Aikido is that one can win without the attacker losing. This can be done by:
  • Blending with the attacker's energy
  • Redirecting that energy, and then
  • Releasing the attacker so that they can learn from the experience.
Kit will explore how this framework also mirrors the coaching work we do with our clients. Come join us for this integrated look at the parallels between the martial art of Aikido and coaching.

Pricing: Members - $30, Non-members - $35
Price includes sandwiches, salads, and drinks

At our March 1st  chapter meeting, we had a lively discussion on the ICF Core Coaching Competencies and how the competencies frame and inform our coaching. Our panelists had diverse views on how to utilize the competencies and offered great nuggets of wisdom that could be utilized by the newest to the more seasoned coach.

Pictured above are our March 1 event panelists, L to R: Jenn
Barley, PCC, Dave Buck, MCC, Natalie Gahrmann, PCC, Karen Sullivan, PCC, and Elias Scultori, PCC.

Why I'm a Member of ICF-NJ

My ICF Journey, Part One
by Chapter Past President Tony Calabrese

Those who know me well, know that I am a storyteller, and what good coach isn't? One of my favorite stories which I like to share is "Why I Joined ICF" and with it how I became an active member of the New Jersey chapter.

I received my coaching certification from IPEC in the summer of 2009. IPEC's eight-month program was winding down when all of a sudden two sources of panic spread across most of the class.

One was that we who were about to become coaches had for the most part had roles in corporations or mid-sized-to-small companies, and were now going to be working in small businesses that we were going to run, and where we were responsible for finding our own clients.

Second, the individuals with whom he had bonded with over the last eight months, sharing soul-baring stories, laughter, tears, and every emotion in between, were no longer going to be a part of our daily and weekly lives.

But before our panic turned into utter depression, our IPEC instructors told us that one of the ways we might want to continue to bond with other coaches was to join our local chapter of the International Coach Federation (ICF). That sounded like a good idea!

Shortly thereafter, I attended my first ICF-NJ meeting, at that time known as the New Jersey Professional Coaches Association. Lynn Schaber, our current co-director of Education and Programs (EPD) was the chapter president, and she and her board members were so welcoming.

Frankly, I don't recall the first speaker nor their topic, but it didn't matter: That same feeling of coaches bonding with other coaches that I had experienced during my coach training was back again in my life. I continued attending sessions, even being part of a Saturday joint session that we had that autumn with the ICF Philadelphia chapter in Pennsylvania.

Autumn turned into winter, and then into spring, and I received a phone call from the ICF-NJ Board. The chapter's Secretary was moving out of the area. Apparently various chapter members had noticed me at meetings, and the board was wondering if I'd be interested in taking on the role of Secretary.

I had lots of thinking to do, and a big decision to make.

More in Part Two!
